45ACP Compact Tactical of Service?

Hello All,

First off I am a new member here on XD Talk. This site has been very informative, and a great help. I am a Paramedic, and have been thinking about being the ERT (SWAT) Medic for the county I work in. All Officers there carry the Glock 21. I will have to supply my own sidearm, and the grip of the 21 feels like a brick in my hands. It's just not comfy! Since they do not issue me a sidearm I can buy whatever I want. As long as it's a 45ACP. I know that I am going to go with the XD, because is just feels great in my hand. I'm going to go with a compact because I want to be able to CC, and have 13+1 for HD and ERT calls. I just can't deside between the Tactical and the Service. Any and all opinons will help. This will also be my first hand gun.

OK so you are realy asking between the service and compact? or the 4 and 5 inch barrel? ther tactical is full size and 5 in and the service is 4in. then you get into the compacts which are shorter but have 2 barrel lengths.

the 4inch of you are carrying. the 5in is a little more difficult cause the extra barrel length if you are carrying OWB>

Just to be clear right quick, there's an XD Compact in 4" for .45acp and an XD Compact in 5" in .45acp. So there is a "compact service" and a "compact tactical" if that makes any sense.

Also, from some ballistics I came across, between 5" bbl and 4" bbl the loss in velocity isn't as significant as is the case in some of the other calibers. I'll dig around and post it up when I find it

I'd get the 4" but if going on a call I'd put the longer mag in. That being said go take a handgun class.

I'd rather have my XD and not need it, then need it and not have it....

Compact Service - I found tactical just a tad too big for me to carry and slightly unbalanced for my taste
