Questions on extended mag release, trigger job, finish....

I just bought a XD45 4inch compact yesterday. I ordered two high capacity and one compact mag kits, trijicon night sights, and an internal lasermax for it from Buds.

I was wondering what your views are on extended mag releases. It seems the factory release is a little awkward for my thumb. Has an extended released caused anybody accidental mag drops? Which is the best one and why?

Tell me about trigger jobs. The out of box trigger is pretty good really but I would like to make it better. Is there a thread for do-it-yourselfers? What tends to be the cost to hire it out and who are the best guys?

I have read that the finish tends to rub for a carry pistol. I do plan to carry it and know it can't stay mint if I do but what can be done to keep the finish nice. Does anybody refinish theirs and what do you use. I was thinking I could over-coat the slide with molly resin or something to give a little extra protection. What are your views on this?

I haven't shot my pistol yet but think I will before the day ends. I've heard A LOT of good things and can't wait to try it out.

Smile Whats really needed.

Myself I would not change the trigger or Mag. release. It's set up as a defence handgun not a range why change it unless it's only for range target use. As for the internal lasermax having to send it in for replacment is not what I would want and it seems like something of and over kill or a see what I have thing. You ordered the trijicon night sights that alone is as much as is really needed.
And yes the finish is not as good as found on my Glock and H&Ks. but it still fairly good.
I am sure others will differ but that my toughts on the subjects.

Canyon Creek makes the defacto extended magazine release. I've got them in all of my XDs and have never experienced an accidental drop, while drawing from a holster or otherwise... When you shoot competition you draw and reload a LOT.

As for triggers... The guys to go to are Canyon Creek and Springer Precision. They both do excellent work (I've had triggers done by both), and their trigger-jobs really turn the XD into a work of art. You can also get the Springer Precision drop-in components (sear, springs and trigger bar) and do-it-yourself. They are almost indistinguishable from a full-blown trigger-job, and it saves you the high cost of shipping your gun to a smith.

I wouldn't worry about the finish until (when/if) it becomes a problem. Melonite is some pretty tough stuff.

I will differ! The Melonite finish on the XD is THE EXACT SAME surface treatment as Glock's Tenifer. Exactly.

Thanks for the reply. You don't need to send it out for the lasermax. You just drop the parts in to replace the guide rod and the breakdown lever. I'm not really planning on the laser as being my means of aiming. It is kind of like you said as a "cool factor." Also if I ever have to pull it I am hoping that putting the dot on someone might help defuse the situation without pulling the trigger. Hopefully I will be able to keep it as just a "cool factor" thing though.

Thanks for the links. I am going to look into these. What would you say the difference in the drop in trigger parts and sending it away are?

The difference is a "one-size-fits-all" job compared to a "custom-tuned-for-your-particular-gun" job. There isn't much difference, but if you shoot both a lot, you'd notice.

finish

hi, i just bought my xd and one thing i can say is the finish is strong. less than 20 min. after i bought mine i was in a very serious car accident and it broke out of its case and was ejected from the vehicle. my cousin found it two days later buried in the gravel and mud. and all it has is a couple of very and i mean very fine scratches. i have only shot about 7 shots out of mine but i think im going to change the sights. has anybody used he suresight triangle? hows it work for target shooting? thanks steve

if the lasermax replaces the guiderod, is it reliable? I've heard some people say thats why its good to get a Don's guide rod, because its a one piece rod and therefore more reliable than the stock 2 piece...You wouldn't want the gun to fail to fire if you need it to because the lasermax/guiderod broke, especially if its a carry piece...

I plan to give it a brutal testing. I have heard a lot of good things about them. I have no first hand experience with any of their internal laser though.

After I have received I'll give a review on it as to how accurate it is. Also I'll comment on it's structural make-up.
