Edumacate me on 45 +P

Folks,

Educate me on 45 +P ammo. I know it's the same brass and bullet weight but with more powder and more pressure (duh!) but can you buy 45 +P ammo? If reloading for it can you point me in the direction of a good reference. Is +P reloading on a par with the .40 S&W in terms of being careful due to high pressures? Would a +P load be a good one for a pissed off animal such as a Black bear?

Here's a pretty good article explaining the concept.

Buffalo Bore makes some 45 ACP +P.

The Alliant web site has some +p data. You are pretty much on your own though. You can load just above the listed max. for std. data, using med. to slow burning powders only please. A chronograph helps. You are looking for 50-75fps increase over a std. factory vel. load. The 45acp operates @ a much lower pressure level than even 9mm. A 45acp+P is still well below std. pressure 9mm & not even close to 40s&w & shouldn't be tried in regular 45acp brass. Proceed w/ caution.

I have gone to Starline 45 Super brass for loading +p 45 loads and I use the data for that Cartridge. I am using it in a Taurus 45acp revolver, H&K USP, and Ruger Blackhawk with the proper cylinder. I have yet to encounter problems with this brass as when I was using standard 45ACP brass I was having problems with primer pockets "growing" after several reloads. I'm using the Speer GD 185 and chronograph all my loads . at present I'm getting 1350 fps(10 rnd avg). with Power Pistol powder.
Alliant powder has data for this cartridge along with several other powder companies.
As for Buffalo Bore, I have been dealing with them for several years and they are a topnotch company. Tim Sundles (owner of BB) is a straight up guy and enjoyable to talk to.
