45 super

First off I am new to this site, so don't beat me up to much if this has already been covered. I did a search but it wouldn't pick up the 45 part.

I know that a USP in 45 will fire this round without and mod. But I don't care for the usp. Are there mods that have to be done to an xd, if so what kind?

Anyone know?

There have been several threads on this subject, but I can't help you with the search deficiencies. I do remember that the woman who was asked the question @ Springfield didn't have a clue what .45 Super was, so she wasn't too much help.

.45 Super can be fired safely (but I don't know why anybody'd want to) in a Glock, with only a recoil spring change. Chances are, that's the only modification you'd need to make on your XD.

.45 super?

now, that is not the same as a .45 +P, right?

if it is the same, when I called Springfield earlier in the week, I asked about it (shooting +P's) because I'd spotted them in a local sporting goods store, the lady in customer service said once my break-in period was over (between 500-750 rounds) then I could shoot +P's

not sure if that helps, but worth a shot, haha

Sounds like you talked to another "lady" @ Springfield (or maybe the same one?) who doesn't know crap. If a +p won't hurt an XD after 700 rds., then it won't hurt it on round #1. It's pretty simple to Google ".45 Super" and find out what .45 Super is. It's hotter than +p.

I would NOT shoot 45 super. It is way to over 45acp pressure. Simply changing springs will not save your pistol.

So, what's the empirical information upon which you base your advice? It's o.k. to shoot .45 Super through a Glock, with only a spring change. Is the XD not as strong as the Glock?

Is OK with Glock? Not the pistol, the company?

Original work for 45 Super done by Ace Custom IIRC, used .308 brass(same head size as .45), counterbored for bullet, extractor and ejector work on 1911, as well as 24lb recoil spring. Batters the frame and cracks it with the cheaper guns, recc. only use with forged frames. Pressure is handled by the brass so it doesn't blow out the web of the case, nowhere near .308 pressure obviously. Ace's guns could also shoot .45ACP with just a spring swap. If I had a tactical, I would try it. Not with a compact or service though, the stock spring wouldn't be up to it. Slide velocity would be ludicrous.

I've shot some .45 Super and it's cousin, the .450 SMC through one of my G21s. Had to go with the heaviest spring that I could find, and I was using a threaded, compensated aftermarket barrel. Didn't have any problems...no frame battering. Lots of people shoot .45 Super through 1911s without the expensive mods that Ace would like for you to pay them to do.

What's the attraction to .45 Super, anyhow? It's a terrible s.d. round and isn't much fun to shoot. Unless you're hunting, what's the point? Dumping a little more powder into a .45ACP case just doesn't move me!
