I think I broke my XD45ACP . . .

Need a little help! I am a mechanical idiot. Was cleaning my XD .45 ACP 4" this morning and when reassembling I THINK I put the guide rod in backwards.

When I pulled the slide to the rear it did not feel right, now when I try to move the slide forward OR backwaqrds it simply WILL NOT budge.

Out of despiration I removed the two pins on the front and rear of the trigger thinking it might free everything up but no help. My guess is I have only gotten myself in further.

Pins are back in but at the point the slide will not budge in ANY direction.

Any advice would be appreciated!

I've done it twice... here is the post to get it unjammed.

Locked up my XD!

Many people to it... It works for me. Be careful not to hit your rear sight.
Good luck.

I think all you need to do is pull the trigger and point it downward.
The slide should fall right off

Pulling the trigger does no good at all. I tried the suggestions at the many threads on the issue and have had no luck other than I can now WITH GREAT FORCE move the slide maybe an inch or so. I think I may have mentioned I am VERY mechanically challenged which is frankly what drew me to the XD. They are SIMPLE enough for me.

I am going to call SA today and see if I can't ship it to them. I know my limitations and this is my primary (Pronounced 24 X 7) carry gun for this time of the year.

The timing as it always is could not be worse. Basically through the warm months this thing sits in the bed side safe as a home defense gun. I carry the 3" .40 When it was warm.

I just LOVE the concept of 14 rounds of .45ACP out of the holster/safe. But now that I am aware that this problem is common I will have much less confidence in this gun . . . . Makes me a little nervous.

Thanks for all the insight and info!

Just got off the phone with them. Called as soon as they opened and it is now only 15 minutes later, and the problem is solved. . . . They provided great help. Actually the folks here did as well, but I am such a mechanical idiot I am afraid to do some things without "Adult supervision".

Basically the guy had me put a cresant wrench on the end of the guide rod and wack it with a hammer, HARD. I never would have done that without carefull instruction. As a testiment of my mechanical ineptitude if you look at the beginning of this thread I speculate that I thought I might have installed the guide rod backwards. As it turns out I did not.

Off to the range today to test fire. After such trama I won't feel compfortable trusting it with my life until a few hundred rounds are through it. Sometimes stupid hurts. With the cost of ammo these days I guess I am getting off cheap. Having my gun back for $50.00 worth of ammo.

Thanks again for all of the help folks!

Glad everything worked out for you. I suspect you time at the range will prove beneifical. However, I wonder why you say you have lost some faith in the XD when it was user error that caused the problem?

I initially thought it was user error, serious error on my part, I figured to lock up so bad something must have been in backwards. Turned out to not be the case, it was simply a matter of the guide rod being a little off center. My loss in confidence is the margin for error factor. When it counts if I had to take it down and throw it back together the idea of the gun being pretty much disabled in a hurry if it is not PERFECTLY alligned scares me a bit. But I think most of the lack of confidence you are reading is my need to test the hell out of something before I trust it after any serious event. I consider the banging and clanging I had to do to get this thing rolling again a serious event. I won't carry a new gun until I have put a couple or so thousand rounds through it either. SOP for me.

Once a gun does something goofy I lose trust in it. I am not saying I am throwing the gun away or anything it just worries me a bit that it had to take such a beating to get it back in the game.

I am eye balling a G21 SF though. Had never been a fan of Glocks but bought a 17 in the spring to lend to students in my classes. I have to say the thing grew on me. FOR MY HANDS and the way everything fits for me the Glock is nice because my thumb does not ride on the slide stop. A habit I have found nearly impossible to break after years of 1911's.

Life is good. There are a lot of them out there. And we get to try 'em all!

It just goes to show:

"If you can't move it with a hammer, get a bigger hammer"

Happened to me the first week I had my XD. I was sweating it, but found someone on here that advised me to do the hammer trick. Scary, but it works!

Cheers! M2

But for someone as inept with mechanical things as I am that quote becomes "If you can't BREAK it with a hammer, get a BIGGER HAMMER".
