Half a XD?

Ok so this may be a silly question but I'm going to ask
anyway....

I have both the compact XD-45 with the 4in barrel and
the compact XD-45 with the 5in barrel.
I noticed the frames of the two are exactly the same.
(why wouldn't they be!!)
Only the slide and barrel are different.

A moot point for me but could one buy only the
slide and barrel of the gun they don't have and save
a few bucks?

You could have the shorty for CC and the longer unit
for the range.

Has anyone done this?

It becomes a pain to swap all the time.

You take it apart to clean it, whats the difference if you
also change the top end?

I don't clean my guns all the time. It would get to be a pain to have a 5in gun for home defense and then unload and swap to a 4in gun for carry. I like to have a pistol ready to go when I leave the house. taking time to swap every time gets to be a pain.

I used to have a Glock 17 and a AA 22 conversion kit for it. That was a pain and I found a Glock frame filled it with parts and I now have 2 guns instead of 1. Now I don't have to swap anymore.

I could see buying a full sized tactical and a compact 4" both in 45 and then you can have two complete guns and swap back and forth to have the compact tactical, compact 4", and then full sized service and tactical models.

If you don't mind taking 30 seconds to drop the mag, empty the chamber, push the take down lever up, pull the trigger, put the other slide on, drop the take down lever, put the mag in and cycle a round into the chamber and then top of the mag again, then go for it. TKOL doesn't want to deal with it, but it doesn't mean you can't do it if Springfield will sell you the desired parts.

EDIT: correction, for readability.

"if Springfield will see you the desired parts"

Well, that then was the original silly question.

Not if it was practictial...

"could one buy only the slide and barrel of the gun they don't have and save a few bucks? "

Can you buy the top end from Springfield?

I sopose I should just ask them.

I don't know, I wouldn't think so, probably only basic replacement parts...springs and pins, but I don't know for sure.

The conversation almost zipped over
me head.

With me, I just swap out barrels! No
need to buy a complete upper, which
SA will not sell anyway.

I first bought a 45 Service and a few months later I bought a Compact Tactical now the 4" slide and barrel reside on the compact frame and the 5" is on the service frame. If I could get a 4" slide and internals I would buy a barrel from Pistol Gear and probably sell the service. As far as I know there is no way to purchase the slide assembly so I'll keep both. Light Knight has a valid point if I shot the tactical more swapping slide/barrel assemblies would become a pain but the compact is a daily carry and the tactical I only shoot at the range.

This is true...I just inquired about purchasing an extra slide from SA. No dice....they won't sell it
