SERPA holster question
OK ... perhaps I might show my ignorance but can someone explain to me the paddle portion of the SERPA holster? I "think" that the paddle can be subbed for the belt loop part but the paddle seems to lack a "belt loop". Is there an advantage of the paddle over the belt loop style? I have tried the Blackhawk website for help as well as an extensive Google search but to no avail.
Thanks and please pull your punches! |

Your exactly right the paddle can replace the belt loops part of the holster. When you use a paddle holster it doesn't attach to your belt at all. The paddle slips down inside your pants while the holster remains on the outside. Just the friction keeps it in place but they are really very stable.
With the Serpa CQC you can choose which arrangement you prefer. I just got one of the Serpa's for my new to me PT-1911 and I am very impressed with it and the way it works.

Paddles are very popular in situations where you may have to take your holster off or put it on more often and don't want to have to undo your belt all the time to do it. They slip on and off more quickly than threading a holster thru the belt.

I perfer the Paddle attachement on the Serpa holster. It keeps the weapon tighter to my body.
The Paddle attachment does use your belt if you have one on for extra stability. If you look on the backside of the paddle attachment there are 2 "hooks" that should hook around your belt. Even with this setup though it is still pretty easy to get off.

My experience with the paddle has been less than great. While it does keep the holster secure to my body, getting the holster off is a pain the butt. Maybe I don't torque it hard enough to get it off, but the hooks have really been hard to get undone from my pants and belt. Any ideas how to fix that?

I've heard of some people dremeling off the little "hook" on the inside of the paddle that goes inside your pants. The other hooks are fairly easy to get off for me. But you are right that inside hook is a PITA to get out of there.

I have been wearing a Serpa Holster everyday for two years now at work (except for when I wear the shoulder rig). I use the paddle attachment instead of the belt slide & prefer it better. The paddle seems to hold it closer to my body & the gun doesn't tilt outwards as much as the belt slide.
As far as getting the paddle off, yes it is a PITA! But I have discovered a quick & easy technique to doing this without damaging the small hooks which are essential to keeping the holster from being easily ripped off you by a suspect. First I grab my gun by the grip and lean the gun toward my body which pulls the hooks away from my belt. I then pull the gun up slightly & it allows the hooks to slide over the belt. Then I push the gun away from my body, while sliding my opposite hand down my waistline to help clear the other two hooks from my pants. It took a while to learn but I could post a quick video if anyone would like to see it.
