The reason for my question is that I'm looking for a .45 for my wife. My XD-45's grip is just a little too big for her to comfortably hold for very long. If the M&P has a smaller grip, that could be a good option for her. Right now I'm considering a single-stack 1911.

I apologize for the thread hijack. You can PM me with the answer.
If my memory serves me correctly I give a slight edge to the M&P with the smaller grip installed. Can you bring her to the gunshop to see what she may like?

I would like to add that the M&P is very easy to shoot with one hand. After a 5 week layoff due to Rotator Cup surgery I finally went to the range and was able to fire the Smith with my good arm. No problem, all shots landed in Black at 10 yards. When I am better I will go back to my usual 25 yards.

We rent both at the range and people seem to like them equally. A few more people prefer the XD but it's a wash. OUR S&W jams some but it's not well maintained.

My Cents

I like the XD looks more. Yes, its utilitarian in a sense, but that is what these tupperguns are! The MP IS nice, and the trigger is very crisp, but heavy OTB - I hear that can be changed. INHO, the Compact is more practical, and has way more advantages over the MP at this point. Now, a BLACK SS slide is very nice - there is a place that SA could improve.

Paula (5'2", 115lbs) has shot both my XD45 and my M&P45 (with the small back strap). She prefers the M&P45. The grip feels better to her and she says the recoil is more manageable when shooting the M&P.

As for me...well, I like BOTH of them!

I have an XD-45, a S&W M&P 45 and a Glock 21 SF. I like all of them for different reasons.

As far as grip for smaller hands, you can't beat the S&W M&P's with the small grip swell attached.
