Federal Ammo
I see commercials for Federal Premium Ammo all the time on the outdoor channel on tv. They talk about how great it is and on tv the "professionals" give it great reviews. I was wondering if the Federal ammo is as good as they say, because my P22 had a hard time with the Federal .22 ammo I bought. Would you guys say it was the ammo...or is it my Walther ?

In my experience, when it comes to rimfire ammo, base your ammo purchases on what your gun likes and not on brand name.
Autoloading rimfires can be pretty picky at times and it can get really frustrating when the econo bulk box of ammo outperforms expensive match-grade stuff. But, alas, such is life

Charlie has it right. Federal does make good centerfire ammunition.
Rimfires are a whole different thing. My P22 eats the Federal Bulk packs without issue, but yes, there are others that can't get it to work reliably in theirs. Just try different types and brands until you find one that it likes. The usual recomendation for P22's is about 200 to 300 of the CCI Mini-Mags to get it broken in, and then it should feed any good high velocity ammo after that. You have to try it though. Is you P22 broken in yet?

Ive fired probably close to 1000 through it. I always buy the Remington golden bullet 550 box and I have almost finished 2 boxes of them. I would say it is pretty well broken in. Fun to shoot, but I just didn't know why that federal ammo wouldnt cycle

Which Federal ammo were you using? Generally P22's do not like standard velocity ammunition, which is why I ask. The Wal-Mart bulk Federal is HV.

I agree with most of the above posts. Rimfire ammo is cheap, buy several different types and see what your gun likes and stay with it.
I use Federal exclusively in a High Standard, but I use CCI in my S&W 41 - just an example.

I got the ammo from Walmart, but it wasnt the bulk it was the small box. I just got it to test it out, (good thing i didnt get the big box) I do remember that the box was blue but that is about it....after I found out they wouldnt work in my gun I gave them away

I've also read that the P22 usually likes high velocity ammo better than standard velocity. I've got a P22 that my 11 yr old daughter LOVES to shoot (and is always asking to go to the gun range
Since it's just a plinker for me and my youngest to shoot, I haven't tried a wide variety of ammo in it.

My P22 LOVES the cheap federal bulk pack, it almost never has any problems whatsoever with this ammunition. I always have problems with the "gold bullets" in some of my .22 lr rifles, so I typically just go with the federal bulk pack because my rifles and my P22 like the stuff. I'm sorry to hear that yours does not, but as others said, sometimes they just don't like one brand and do some other (price doesn't even matter sometimes). Hope you get it figured out and best of luck to ya.
