Of course personal preference is just that and I respect that.
As was posted somewhere else, which I can't find, it allows you to illuminate a darkness without the potential of pointing the gun at an innocent person. With the light mounted on the weapon the gun is always pointed where the light is, not good if that person is your wife, child, or even the family dog. In like manner should the situation dictate you can quickly part with the light without parting with the gun, ie; throw the light in one direction while you and the gun move in another. The light itself can be used as a weapon if necessary. There are high intensity lights on the market that actually are bright enough to impair the vision of those caught in the beam this can be an advantage when confronted with multiple bad guys, though you might consider this a tactical advantage. As to the original question my choice would be both with the condition that the night sights be TFOs.

Thanks. That's exactly the kind of feedback I was looking for. While I was thinking of illuminating with my trigger finger on the slide until the potential threat target was identified, you've made your point extremely well and a handheld may be a better choice for my scenerio. Not having actually seen the TFOs installed but seeing the support they have here, I'll look into them a little more seriously as a potential choice and check into the tactical handhelds. From what I remember seeing, some manafacturers have a rail mount for their handheld which may make them a little more versatile than a railmount only like the TLR-1.

You are most welcome... If you go for TFOs remember green/green are the brightest combination as yellow is a littly dim in daylight. The TFO dot appears to be on the large side because the whole dot is light emitting while trijicon have a non emitting ring around the dot, this also make the trijicon harder to see in daylight conditions. I have TFOs on both my HD gun and my carry gun and find they work very well, as someone said an added advantage is they make it easier to find your gun in the dark. Go Luck.

It's nice to have options. If you want a light, get one. But don't use it as a crutch. Be able to operate without it.

Thanks Ishpeck, that's pretty much what I have been getting from several of the comments, but you spelled it out. I may still go with the LaserMax laser sight, but I'm rethinking the TAC light. With all of the led flashlights that I'm discovering, that have rail mounts, I have them as an option too. Use it, or don't, but like you say, "Be able to operate without it."

I am glad this type of discussion takes place here. I can't imagine I'm the only returning enthusiast that hasn't followed technology changes and there are YEARS of experience out there. Even an old dog like me can learn a few new tricks.
