Do any of you recommend this site to someone new to the XD world? Even a an officer who stopped you after a conversation like that?

Glad everything went smoothly. I'm dealing with an officer right now who gave me a warning, and then submitted the citation anyway, and then told me he was going to withdraw it, and then I got a second notice about the citation and then he said he was really going to withdraw it and that was a week and a half ago and it's still not withdrawn. I guess there are good ones and bad ones in all areas of life.

I've only been asked once, but the problem was much more than a simple traffic stop. It was a road rage incident where I was the victim while on my motorcycle.

I would recommend that, with hands on wheel, dome light on, inform the lEO that you have a permit to carry a concealed firearm, and are doing so. Saying 'I have a gun" will be all the LEO will probably hear for awhile, and might put your life in jeopardy. After notifying the LEO, await further instructions.
Each state has differing requirements for notification.
For example, in NC, our permit # is our driver's license #, and we ARE required to notify. Failure to do so is a crime.
You could search this site for other threads covering this exact topic.

Good story, unfortunately Blackhawk doesn't make a light bearing holster for the XD yet.

Actually the Omega IV holster that fits a Glock model of equal size will fit the XD. That's what I did when I got my XD45 service. I got the holster for the G22/23(I was originally getting the XD40 but switched at the last minute), and it fits both my service and Compact tactical 45's just fine. Just get the model with the light if someone so wishes.

But I guess it depends on what kind of holster he wanted .

Back on topic.

You're correct, but I'll rephrase... Blackhawk doesn't make a molded light bearing holster for the XD yet...

On topic though, regardless of whether it's required by law to inform the officer, I would do it anyway before he even asked. If while you moved to get your DL or insurance papers he saw something printing or exposed, you're in a world of trouble.

I think this is EXCELLENT advise. Over the years, I've had occasion to discuss with friends that were LEOs and most recently a CHP in Central California. We've discussed legal as well as illegal carry in a vehicle. From his perspective, he'd much rather be told up front than see a weapon "when it's too late" and now he's drawn down on the driver, making BOTH a little more nervous as well as causing the entire encounter to last a lot longer.

A surprised officer has a little more adrenaline flowing than one that approaches a car with the engine shut off, window rolled down, dome light on and the drivers hands on the steering wheel.

If this happens, you haven't concealed your weapon well enough, have you?

When I went through police academy in 1992, the state AG came and gave us a little lecture on our state constitution. Someone asked him if he was a citizen with a permit, and was carrying a weapon during a traffic stop, would he volunteer this info to the officer, or wait for the officer to ask.

He said he'd wait, and be cooperative, and see if the officer asked. Frankly, my safety is more important to me than the officers safety, and if that means not telling a cop that is already tense from a traffic stop (a known dangerous situation for police officers) that I have a gun, and that keeps a gun from being pointed at me, "for my safety", than that is the chance I will take. That police officer isn't going to see my gun anyways unless I start turning my pockets inside out, or I start rolling over onto my stomach, all fairly difficult for me while seated in a car.

What a dumb question. Me being the smart ass I am, I would have said "for the same reason you are".

Yup, I usually just stick both arms out the window after i turn on my flashers and my dome light. Then as soon as he starts to speak, i cut him off and say "before you begin i'm legally obligated to inform you......yadda yadaa"
