Take the gun to a local gunsmith and he will very quickly find out what is wrong. Then if it is a part failure you can send it back to SA and they will make it right. If it is gunk in the inner works, the gunsmith can clean it and you can discuss with him what kind of ammo you are shooting and what kind of stuff you are using to clean the gun.

This isn't all that big of a deal. If it was happening to many people or to the same person over and over, that would be different.

Wouldn't it be a lot $impler to just buy the "right-sized punch" and do the cleanup yourself, rather than pay a gunsmith to do the same thing? This ain't rocket science, guys!

the pistol has less than 250 rounds through it
Most issues with ANY semiauto pistols occur before the 500 round mark. This is because they are like a engine and have a break-in period. And any problems related to mass-assembly or minor fitting/clearance problems will surface during this period. So you may either have a brass shaving or some other foreign matter obstructing, or you may have one of the mass-assembly problems (size, fitting, out-of-tolerance part, roughness) that either SA or a gunsmith can correct. I would not let this one break-in incident change your views on XD reliability. This can, and definitely does, happen with any mass-produced brand. You just need to look at the big picture here before you throw out the baby with the bath water.

Might be a genuine mechanical problem that he can't ID. Gunsmith will know for sure.

The XD will not go into battery if the striker is "bound up", unless it's stuck in the "ready to fire" position. If that's the case, do as everyone else has said and clean it out.
If it is going into battery with the striker forward, your sear is likely the problem.

Folks, you've been really helpful. I've been in contact with SA customer service and decided to send the pistol back to them. Frankly, with the right punch I could completely disassemble the slide and clean everything and reassemble it. Maybe that is all it would take. I suppose a new striker retaining pin would be necessary so I'd have wait time obtaining that item. If the problem was more serious then I'd need professional help anyway so sending it back makes sense. SA will reimburse return shipping charges up to $50 which I think is quite fair. Since Sunday when the problem arose the initial lack of confidence has moderated. After all, I have put well over a thousand rounds through the 3 different XD 45's I've had since last spring with only this failure. I've also put another couple hundred through the tactical model since Sunday without problems so I am feeling more relaxed. In fact, I'll probably have SA install some tritium sights while they have the pistol. I really have been impressed with the XD in terms of its ergonmics and accuracy. I'd hate to give it up and start over. It had become my primary carry pistol. The cost of holsters and other accessories I've already purchased is equal to or exceeds the purchase price of the pistol. That represents some commitment so I'll give it a chance. I've taken a deep breath and let go of my fears for now. When it returns, I've got a case of American Eagle ball on hand to run through it and hopefully cement my confidence in its reliability. I'll let you know how things turn out. Thanks again all....regards, ptn
