Failure to Feed with HydraShok?
Hello,
My first post! I have an xd-45 service model. Great gun, have had it for about a month and have put about 600 rounds thru it. I have no ftf issues with it at all with 230-gr, ball ammo: Blazer Brass or WWB. 230 grain Hydra Shoks (tactical and regular) are another story. About 1 round per magazine fails to feed. They either jam the slide, or usually fail to clear the mazagine at all and I wind up with an empty chamber . . . then 'click' instead of bang. This happens with both magazines I have. I called Springfield yesterday and the rep said that they can tune it to a specific ammo, but won't guarantee any other ammo will work after their modification. Obviously, I'm going to try other hollowpoint ammo before sending it in. I clean the gun religiously after every shooting session, the ramp is clean and looks like a mirror, and I'm not limp wristing. Anyone else out there have problems with Hydrashoks, hollowpoints in general, or have any suggestions with what might be wrong with my xd-45? Thanks in advance. |

My XD 45 Tactical will eat Hydra Shok's okay but that really doesn't mean anything. I have had two 1911s of the same type and manufacture and their likes and dislikes as it related to ammo were not the same.
Bottom line, you always try a variety of defense rounds in your particular gun before staking your life on it. The Hydra Shok is a good round but there are other just as capable on the market so try a number of them out and make absolutely sure it feeds 100% in your particular weapon. Good luck. |

My XD45 Service feeds 230 Hydrashok perfectly. Are you marking your magazines?

I had a problem with my magazine, that may be worth checking into. It's my understanding that the vast majority of feeding issues are magazine related. Have you tried other Hollow points?

Thanks for your replies. I do accept that I will have to try different hollowpoints and hopefully one of the good one's out there will feed. It would be unacceptable, however, if no hollowpoint feeds.
Yes Reeek, I have numbered my mags and I'm having these feed issues with both. Monk, I've tried a few Spear Gold Dots 230 grains with success. Literally just a few and next session I will shoot as many gold dots as I own and see if I can have no ftf. What puzzles me is that some of my ftf is a slide in battery and an empty chamber. I suppose bad mag springs would cause that. . . Does Springfield's warranty cover the mags? |

they replaced my mag at no cost. I did have to pay shipping to send the old mag back, but that was like 1.50

Hollow point bullet like the Hydra Shok have always been the most difficult type bullets to load in any semi auto due to the flat nose. Polishing the feed ramp may help but the quickest solution for defence rounds is to switch to Corbon PowRBall bullets which have a round polymer nose to aid with the feed issues. It is still a very effective self defence round.

Nothing special about the performance of Hydrashoks relative to other hollow points, especially in a 45. Just see what works, and don't give it another though.

I was having a lot of FTF hiccups when I first got my XD 40 and I had to send it back to SPringfield. They polished up my barrel ramp and put the new finish on my slide. Now I just keep it nice and lubed and don't have any problems whatsoever since I got it back. XD's can be finicky as far as the type of ammo they'll feed. Mine also didn't like reloads at all. Just one of those things. Springfield tells you in the manual not to feed your gun reloads, I guess I should've just listened to what the manufacturer said in the first place. Either way, hope that helps. The barrel of the XD's are very tight and won't feed perfectly with certain types of ammo. Good luck with everything.

Recently I decided to change my carry from JHP to ball ammo...I want to maximize penetration, esp with winter coming up. Anyway, I have been using the Remington JHP and have had no problems with them thru my XD45c. WWB and Blazer Brass just fine as well. (did have one round BB that had a primer burnout in chamber. Primer fizzled and smoked, burning thru the primer rim out the backside...Never saw that before...) +1 on trying Corbon. mrwildroot
