Reducing kick in my XD .45 Tactical??

I know theres upgrade items to take some of the kick or recoil *sorry newbie still not sure what term is best to use* out of the gun especially for say competition shooting. Was wondering what some of them upgrades where exactly and what some of the best brands to buy where. Only the best goes into my baby. Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Honestly the best recoil control your gonna get is learning proper grip... go to www.springerprecision.com and watch both grip videos... It makes a world of difference once you get it right, and I've tested it out on some girls that I know that have never shot before... I got them to shoot however they wanted to hold the pistol, then taught them HOW to hold it, and a girl that weighed about 105 had almost no recoil out of my dads .45 1911... much less out of my xd9... BUT if you want to put something INTO your gun you can check with Sprinco for a recoil reduction kit, but the truth is, that the gun has to have a certain amount of "recoil" to operate, so the best thing to do is to learn to control it...

Also, you could try a tungsten guide rod. A little more weight to the front of the pistol.

I have been shooting 45 ACP for a lot of years and have never found the cartridge to be a problem with recoil. That being said, I am not sure what you could do with your XD 45 Tactical to reduce recoil. Not sure if anyone has gone through the trouble or expense to port the barrel and slide or affix a compensator on it. Both of these would reduce perceived recoil to an extent but would be costly and I'm not sure that the reduction of recoil would offset the cost.

If you reload, you could try reduced loads but then again, you could not reduce them too much or there wouldn't be enough energy to operate the slide. Not sure what you are shooting in it right now but it you are shooting 230 grain bullet and move down to a 185 grain bullet might help a little.
Maybe someone on the site will have a better idea but in the absents off anything else, practice will go a long way in overcoming any issues you have with recoil. Good luck.

I use Don's fat guide rod which adds a little weight (I prefer a metal rod anyway) and a 20# recoil spring in my Comp Tact. It does lessen the felt recoil a bit, makes a great combination

Usually, when I hear people complaining about recoil in a semi-auto, I tell them to come over and fire my .357 Magnum revolver. That should shut them up.

And it that doesn't work, they can come fire one of my .44 Magnums with 300 grain JSPs.

Except for practice, lots and lots of practice, this is the list I came up with:
1- Good grip (shooting fundamentals, always go back to the fundamentals first)
2- Softer loads
3- Add weight (like a heavy guide rod, then you can)....
4- Experiment with different recoil spring weights
5- Find people that compete with the same gun and ask them how they have dealt with the problem.
6- Good grip (just a reminder to practice the fundamentals)
7- Ported barrel and slide
8- Ported muzzle weight
9- Lots and lots and lots of practice. Nothing can replace practice. Nothing.

Actually the lighter the recoil spring the less perceived recoil... BUT its only mechanically safe (for the XD) to go down to 18lbs... which is stock... Alot of guys that shoot 1911's can drop down to 12lbs or less and still have the gun run fine, but the xd is different... When you get one of Don's guide rods and a "Heavier" spring the recoil will feel "different" so most people think it feels like a lighter recoil, when actually its just a slower recoil, but theres more force in it... if you were to shoot a gun with a 12 lb spring you'd see the difference...

Im new to the XD but not 1911's and Gods gift the 45ACP and I am running a 16.5 # spring in my tactical. I just yesterday mounted the FastFire and Im waiting on the FireDragon ported barrel. Im considering having the slide lightened as well and then revisit springs up and down the range to see what feels best.
Im curious to see how far and well the XD Tactical can be pushed into the open class realm.
