Thinking about a trigger job
...But I'm terrified that Mister Postman will decide he'd rather just keep my XD when I send it off.
Anyone have any tips to minimize (or eliminate) this possibility?

+1...I have used FedEx with absolutely no problem whatsoever. Our local facility is accustomed to shipping firearms. The key is not having any label on the package that identifies the contents. I also recommend insuring the package to cover the value of the pistol.

Assuming you buy your guns from a regular gunshop, next time you are buying one say "As part of this deal, I want you to handle the shipping of this gun for a trigger job for the cost of shipping only". An FFL can send your gun via USPS which is CHEAP.
That's what I did, paid $7 for the shipping. Word of warning: once you get a trigger job, you'll need 'em on all your XDs. It's the hidden cost of XDs, they really need trigger jobs to be smooth shooters (trigger take up & reset is way too long).

I don't like the USPS for shipping pistols, period. I've had them lose them on their shelves for days at a time on several occassions. They are there, they just can't find them. It really pissses me off.
FedEx has been great to work with. |

well why dont you order the drop in parts then if you still want a full trigger job on it send it in and im sure they will give you a discount since you already have most if not all of the parts

Break it in first
If you haven't put a lot of rounds through it yet, you might want to wait before doing a trigger job. I've yet to encounter a handgun that didn't have a better trigger pull after 500 rounds than it did out of the box, especially stainless steel handguns. After that, make the decision one way of the other. My XD is only up to 300 rounds and it already feels better - not where I want it to be, but definitely improved.
