suppressor questions
couple of questions:
1. is a supressor effective on .45 acp enough to make a difference in dB levels 2. can i purchase a threaded barrel or does one need to be machined i understand i cant just throw a suppressor on my gun and must obey the laws. i am just researching before i blow some cash.

A suppressor will greatly reduce the noise (db levels) on ANY firearm, as that what it's intent is.
Now, where the confusion comes in, is when one start talking about "silencers" and how they cannot silence a supersonic projectile, etc I'll just say for the record, I've NEVER heard a firearm silenced, but have enjoyed the sound of many suppressed firearms.

From what I have heard it will make a difference in almost any gun, but it is more effective with subsonic rounds. I know EFK Firedragon has threaded barrels for about $200.

Nearly all .45acp ammo is subsonic, (under 1080fps I believe). A supressor will greatly reduce most noise, you'll mainly just hear the action cycle of the semi-auto and a small popl

There is an article in this months Rifleman about suppressed M14 rifles as used in Vietnam and other conflicts. It nicely explains how a suppressor used with a supersonic cartridge was very useful indeed.
On a recoil operated device like an XD-45 you will need a suppressor made to work with them, the 45 pistol sized cans I have heard are not "hollywood quiet" by any means....nor was the 10mm glock with a suppressor that I shot............but they are much quieter. Another benefit is that the suppressor works as a muzzle brake but the recoil enhancer that is required in the suppressor to make the recoil operated gun work may take away some of that effect. FWIW I would suggest a 22 muzzle can as your FIRST suppressor not a 45 can, the 22 can will indeed be "hollywood quiet" I did see some xd-45 barrels that are avail threaded or just extra long, I posted them to another thread, Bill |

I'm interested in what it takes to be able to get a suppressor in TX. I understand that you have to follow the ATF procedures, but I'm not sure if there are any superceding laws in TX. If not, I still think it may be difficult to get the head LEO to sign off on it.
A suppressor would be great on a home defense weapon. I cringe thinking about firing off my .40 or .357 in the house. |
