Factory Gun Case Airline Approved?

Does anyone know if the factory gun case that came with my XD45 is airline approved? It is a "hard sided case" and it has the foam lining and it's lockable. Thanks

From TSA:
You must declare all firearms to the airline during the ticket counter check-in process.
The firearm must be unloaded.
The firearm must be in a hard-sided container.
The container must be locked.

From Southwest airlines:
Firearms must be encased in a hard-sided, LOCKED container that is of sufficient strength to withstand normal handling, as follows:
  1. A firearm in a hard-sided, locked container may be placed inside a soft-sided, unlocked suitcase.
  2. A firearm placed inside a hard-sided, locked suitcase does not have to be encased in a container manufactured for the transportation of firearms

Yes, you can use the factory case for airline travel.

I'd say it's good to go. I once used a S&W factory hardcase
much like the Springfield one for such travel.

Are you sure you want to put your firearm on a passenger airline with all the trouble there has been? I'd rather box it up nice, and send it FedEx overnight well insured.

See this thread for more info, it is happening with such frequency I would not trust the TSA or the baggage handlers with anything valuable or dangerous: A Frightening Incident

Caution: I just got back from a trip to Michigan where I transported both XD and EMP via checked luggage. The TSA supervisor struck up a conversation with me (fellow XD owner!) and warned me that the mfg hardcase would not be sufficient, given that it still opens a little even when you've locked it with a cable for padlock. He passed it through, but said next time to travel with a case that when locked, doesn't have any space to open at all. I told him about my center-of-mass safes, and he said, exactly what you should use next time.

I have traveled out of DFW INTL with my XD locked in my factory case 3 or 4 times now. I used two pad locks though AND locked it into a soft sided bag. I put the pad locks on opposite ends of the handle so it wouldn't have any room to open as I noticed even with one lock on it it could open enough to get the pistol out of it.

I just made sure that the TSA rep checked my firearm AND bag at the same time and they put one of those red tags on it that says it has already been checked by a TSA rep and is good to go so that way they don't try to open the bag later.

FED EX company policy is they only allow you to ship to a FFL. So if you do ship FED EX do not let on that it is a complete firearm...

Please don't argue this fact with me, I was at their main hub yesterday going through this cause I want to shoot a match and not take my gun on the plane. It is written in plain english in their book, They will not accept it otherwise...UPS may be different.

I bought one of these. Never had any trouble with Southwest. Just hang around until it gets thru TSA. http://www.center-of-mass.com/

Anytime you ship a firearm it has to go to an FFL holder. Even C&R weapons have to go to a C&R FFL holder. The only exceptions would be AR uppers which aren't considered "firearms" by the ATF. You could ship your upper and check your lower. Hell I bet you could carry your lower minus the uppoer as carry on I bet no one would know what it is half the time.

edit-also most of the time when you ship a firearm they REQUIRE it be shipped overnight delivery which costs big bucks a lot of times.
