Question Need Advice... Maybe on Grip or Something Else

When I shoot my XD45, I have a nice grouping...but it's to the left of the bulls. I thought I may need to adjust the front sight, but when my bud shot it...it hit dead on.

So yesterday I was in front of the mirror practicing my grip & stance and when I'd squeeze the trigger, I noticed I would pull the gun to the left (I'm right handed). I gripped the gun tighter & the left pull lessened somewhat...but still wanted to go in that direction. My grip is is the one with both thumbs together on the side on the gun, pointing towards the intended target and I use just the tip of my finger on the trigger.

Do I need to alter my grip somewhat............or will it correct itself with more practice and rounds down range?

Here is my advice: grip the gun the strongest with your right hand, wrap you left hand around the right hand, it doesn't need to be terribly tight. Remove your thumbs from off the gun. It is typically called "flying thumbs", you just have them in the air. Make sure that on your right hand the tang is inline with the rest of your arm. You should be able to shoot right on target.

Hmmm, just found this a couple of threads down.

An excellent training aid for those new to handgun shooting.

Thanks Jimmy, I'll try that also.

Well I'll be danged. Just got back from the mirror, took my thumbs off of the side of the gun & laid them together on top of my hand...but still against it somewhat. Used the middle of the pad of my finger.........and NO pulling to the left. Front sight stayed put.

Now, time for some live fire & practice, practice, practice.

Mirror practice is OK but Recording your dry fire practice is much better.

*EDIT* I tried it with snap caps in the living room and it definitely feels more stable and my sights do line up faster when I draw into that position.

That is the best article I've ever read on that grip style. I stumbled on that style on night just dry firing at the bad guys on TV.. I had issues prior to that with a slight leftward pull. Initially I was thumbs on and have since shifted to the Enos style of thumbs off. Didn't know that those two invented the grip But I will say that it's improved my pistol shooting a thousand fold. Oddly, because I have longer thumbs and some weird ranges of motion with my thumb joints (hitch hikers thumb some call it) the positioning is far more comfortable for me than others. Getting new shooters to adopt it takes a good bit of nagging for the first few sessions, but they realize that doing that rather than the 70's era underhand support works a lot better. This is especially true when I dump 2 mags into the kill zone really fast and they see how much faster the target acquisition happens vs. their TV concept

There is a reason that Rob Leatham is the greatest action pistol shooter of all time.

Holy sh*t, what an improvement!!! I'm doing that grip from now on. I am so excited that I picked up on that grip style so fast, I did do some snap cap practice at home the day before with that grip so I am sure that helped

It is a very easy grip style to learn and your shooting will improve very quickly.
