Question XD-45 on the horizon .. How many Reload?

Hi all,

Looks like an XD-45 in the near future at a really decent price .. can hardly wait !!
Now, I'm SURE the ammo price is gonna cause sticker shock ... but as I already load 9mm for my other XD ...
Getting the required dies, etc, etc. for .45 will be a no brainer .....
Made me wonder, do "most" of you guys run factory stuff OR roll your own ?
Oh ... the XD-45 ... is the tactical more fun to "play" with or most of you guys use the service 4" ?
My plans are mostly for fun shooting and maybe some IDPA shooting once in a while.
Thanks for your thoughts.

Gordon in Greensboro

My XD45 was the driving force behind my reloading after years of not doing so... those 13 round mags eat ammo FAST!

It's easy to load for the XD if you just avoid the temptation to use SWC's. Some have been successful, but most haven't. Personally prefer the service over the tactical, but that's just a preference. My XD seems to like Berry's 185 HBRN over 4.8 grains of Titegroup, OAL 1.155, and that's what it gets.

I already reload for all of my other guns, so the XD45 is nothing special there, but it is easy to reload for with the fully-supported chamber and conventional rifling of the XD45 (which allows the use of lead bullets.) .45 Auto is also easy to get good results with if you don't try to hot-rod it.
.45 Auto brass is a bit more expensive so I would get a bulk deal on once-fired brass and also buy bullets in bulk. Lead and then plated (Berry's, Ranier) bullets are the cheapest, and the bullets found in high-end combat loads are the most expensive (Speer Gold Dot HP, Hornady XTP, other HPs) but they are not something you normally plink with.

I have been reloading for well over 20 years and will continue to do so. It is a fun hobby in itself. Anything that will increase your ability to shoot more is worth the investment. The .45 ACP is easy to reaoad for.

I have enough carry guns, I wanted a range gun so I went with the XD 45 Tactical. If you plan to shoot in IDPA, the Tactical might be the better choice.

I reload for my .40. I also reload .38, .357 and 9mm.

I am not a fan of running lead bullets through my guns so I go the plated route. I have run Hornady (XTP) and Rainiers through my .40 and for the money prefer to use the Rainiers for plinking. Brass for everything is outrageous right now.

This part of the hobby is new to me, but it sure is fun

The only factory stuff any of my guns see is for SD/HD. All my practice & hunting ammo is handloads. I don;t really know how anyone can afford to shoot factory amm.

Your telling me. I just picked up a J-frame airweight for my wife to use for SD/HD and to learn on and I about fell to the floor when I saw that the price for 5 rounds of jacketed .38 special ammo was 3 times what I can get .40 cal jacketed ammo for at the same store. Luckily I have boxes upon boxes of .38 special brass

I don't know about that even anymore. I am becoming more and more confident in my hand loads and enjoying how they shoot and the accuracy, that I am very close to carrying handloads over factory loads for SD.

No problems with some loads...

As the man said above, SWC loads don't work either in my Tactical or in the Service pistol. I have used a Meister truncated cone cast 225-grain bullet over 4.8 grains of Titegroup and a 1.210" overall length with great success, however. At less than $5.00 a box invested, I can really enjoy myself--even with those big old 13-shot magazines.

After buying my first XD45 (with four extra mags), my second purchase was another XD45 (with another four extra mags). My third was an RCBS Rock Chucker Supreme Master Reloading Kit.

I've been loading Hornady 230gr FMJ-FP over 5.8gr of Unique, to feed my XDs. But recently, I purchased 1500 230gr Hornady HAP bullets, and I'm going to try switching to Accurate No. 5, or some other ball powder. The Unique, a flake-type powder, just doesn't measure as consistently as I'd like out of my Uniflow powder measure.
