How fragile.....
Looking at some fiber optic sights for my XD-45. How fragile are these? I am not a LEO and do not carry the XD-45....So looking at range time and chasing the occasional idiot down the street.

Mine have been pretty tough. Except for that time I was shooting under a barricade at an IDPA match, and after the recoil, the slide came back into the barricade. Williams sent me some new FO material, it was an easy fix. But if you're dumb, you can break it.

I carried my compact with a fiber front sight for 3 years I think and replaced it once. Its not hard to replace the fiber and you can buy it online cheap. I found a place to get it for a few $$ per 3 foot lengths..
Even if the fiber falls out, the sigh post is still usable. For CCW though, I prefer tritium.

I wonder how much they would charge for a replacement tritum fiber element.

If I remember correctly, tritium is radioactive, and has to be changed by the manufacturer as per fed regulations.

They are not rock solid.
I've seen several front sights 'crushed' just from mounting them on the slide.

Let's not confuse anyone. Fiber optic is a solid plastic material like a piece of hard spaghetti and is relatively resilient and easy to change when necessary, it require ambient light to function. Night sights are hollow tube filled with a self contained light source usually tritium gas, they are fragile to impact and direct pressure and can not be replaced by the end user.

I had a set and they were easy to pick up, but the front came out after a couple of months. However, other people have had great results with them. I got a replacement set pretty easy from Truglo and swapped them for four mags and a bore snake.
