Detail strip - newbie report
After about 1200 rounds, I performed a detail strip on my XD45 Service. I'd never done it before on this or any other gun, so I thought I'd share the newbie experience.
I took it completely apart, except for the extractor and the magazine release. I couldn't get the extractor out: Dunlap's trick of banging on the bottom of the slide with a mallet until the extractor jumps out did not work for me, and I didn't have a tool that could get under it to pry it out. I skipped the magazine release because I'd had enough frustration for one day. The entire job took about 3 hours, including a couple of parts searches. Lessons learned: 1. It probably didn't need it. There was not much crud inside. Next time I'll let it go 2-3000 rounds. 2. The dirtiest part was the smallest - the loaded chamber indicator. 3. Three items need special attention to avoid launching: The striker spring, the loaded chamber indicator, and the firing pin safety. I forgot about the last item and tried to put it into orbit. It took much longer to find the tiny spring than the safety itself. Safety glasses would be a good idea. 4. Orange Blast works great for cleaning & degreasing. 5. When you first reassemble the grip safety, it feels mushy to the point where it doesn't seem like it will work reliably. It firms up when you reinstall the trigger. Thanks to everyone on this forum for all the great advice! |

I've been wanting to do a detail strip myself. I've never done one before. I examined the exploded view of the XD to understand how all the parts fit together, but a step by step process with pics and tools used would be very helpful.

Sorry, ishpeck, no pics. The link in cougar_guy's post has lots - mine looks just like them
Gfunk, get the AGI DVD (http://www.pistolgear.com/proddetail.php?prod=05AGI). It's an excellent step-by-step, how hard should I whack it demonstration. Tools I used were a cheap pin punch set (1/16", 3/32", 1/8"), an 8-oz ball-peen hammer, needle-nose pliers, and my trusty penknife. I also used a mallet to try to bounce out the extractor, but as I mentioned it didn't work. I didn't have any slave pins, so I got creative with cut up toothpicks and Qtips. A good flashlight at a low angle to the floor helps you find those dropped pieces. I used a disposable aluminum roasting pan to hold everything for cleaning and oiling. BTW another lesson learned: During reassembly, your fingers get pretty oily. Pausing and starting the DVD can be hazardous to your remote. |

Thanks for the report. I still have not detail stripped any of mine yet but plan to at some point.
