First simple question

This 45 ACP Service (black) is the first handgun I have ever owned. I have been a long arm person for the brunt of my 51 years.

So I need recommendations for cleaning products or kits for my XD. I know this is a simple and rudimentary question but I expect there are good and better products out there for taking care of my XD. Things like lube, wipe down products, bore brushes, etc.

Any suggestions?

Any of the standard cleaning kits from a major vendor should work for you. I use one made by Kleen-Bore:

In my cleaning kit, the basic item include your everyday brass brush for your caliber, a Bore-Snake, bottle of Hoppes, and patches.

Then I have a few small accessory cleaning items like dental picks, toothbrush, and a bottle of Militec. I'd highly recommend Militec as it will ease all of you future cleanings. I also make sure that I have a boresnake for every caliber that I own. I'm a big fan of the "mirror" finish.

About like cleaning a long gun - there are more options and opinions than you can digest.

I started out with a basic Hoppe's kit from Walmart. Now I have than plus a can Birchwood-Casey solvent to replace the Hoppes #9 I ran out of and some Rem Oil.

Of course a toothbrush and some pipe cleaners are handy for the slide and some hard-to-reach places.

Actually, I just use a bore snake and a good bore scrubber/cleaner. An old toothbrush or brass brush to clean hard to get spots that the snake can't, and call it good. I use a little a lithium grease where the slide and frame come in contact. Keyword there is "a little". You could use graphite or any other lube. Try to stay away from oils though. They will eventually attract dirt, and gunk it up. But I'm sure you already knew that little bit of info already.

Chi Town,

Do you buy enough MP-Pro 7 solvent to let the entire barrel soak for 5-15 minutes or what? How do you apply this solvent? Just on the pads? It sounds like pretty good stuff although a bit expensive?

Here is what I read about it:

"Bore Conditioning - The first cleaning with MPro7 Gun Cleaner may take a bit longer than normal since MPro7 removes carbon that has been in the bore since the first test fire. (Cleaning new firearms enhances the bore conditioning.) Continuous firing bonds carbon, lead and most copper fouling to the bore metal in layers. No other cleaner can remove these stubborn layers of carbon and metal fouling. Therefore, it takes MPro7 some time and multiple applications to penetrate these old layers and remove them permanently. The key is dwell time and agitation. The longer MPro7 sits, the less agitation is required. Typically, 5 to 10 minutes is enough. Once these layers are removed, subsequent cleaning time and effort can be reduced by up to 80% (depending on the degree of build up). With a surface completely devoid of carbon deposits, it takes longer for fouling to build up and it does not adhere as easily to the bore."

I like fritzmeister's first suggestion though! Brilliance in it;s simplest form indeed . . .
