Sear Kits?
What exactly does a sear kit do? If a sear kit lightens the trigger pull doesnt that make defending a shooting harder. Defense counsel saying the gun owner is a "Rambo" and ready to shoot at a moments notice.

But, I know what you meant. The aftermarket sear will make the trigger pull shorter a little lighter, and break more crisply. The two springs (especially the sear spring) will reduce the pull weight even more, but it won't be anything like a "hair trigger". You'll still have some pre-travel and about 3.5-4 pounds of pull weight. Adding a modified trigger bar will remove almost all of the pre-travel, but you still have the 3.5-4 pounds of pull. As for legality, one could have an expert witness testify (truthfully) that a shorter/lighter trigger increases accuracy. You are more likely to hit what you intended to hit. I don't know about you, but if I ever have to draw and fire at a person, it is because I'm afraid for my life and want to be sure I stop the threat. On the other hand, if you don't feel there is any benefit FOR YOU in modifying the gun, then don't do it just because you can. Now, if the situation is not a clear cut case of self-defense (to an outsider), then things might get dicey. This is where you hear people recommend keeping your mouth shut before you say something that could be construed as guilt, regret, or an accident. Last edited by D_Fence; 07-24-2007 at 11:26 AM. |

Legality
I meant to say the prosecution and not defense. You are right, that if the defense lawyers say you are a Rambo you are doomed. Are sear kits something that can be dropped in or does a gunsmith have to install them?
Thanks for the information on sear kit. I now have a clear understanding of what they do. |

Since sear's don't normally have the brand name on them, how are they going to know it's not original anyway without being told?

They are shaped a little different but you really would have to know the XD to pick it out. If this were really going to be a valid legal issued it would have to be generally know these upgrades were commonly used to make the gun more lethal. If the lawyer were really desperate he might have an expert compare the trigger to the production trigger pull and the difference would have to be very significant. Making a gun function better is not a valid legal issue and the horror stories are more myth than truth. Actually a laser or light mounted on your gun would be more of a potential concern than an after market sear.
