SWC in XD 45?

I know there has been a lot of talk and testing with SWC in the XD 45 but has anyone been successful? In the Sept/Oct issue of American Handgunner, John Taffin has an article "HEAVY BULLETS IN THE SPRINGFIELD XD" (page 32) and in there he states "I aquired a load from Jeff Cooper using the H&G 200 grain SWC over 7.0 to 7.5 grains of Unique. This is a very powerful load and was used in the Springfiled XD45 with excellent results." He does state later in the article he had to load the bullet with no sholder exposed.

I've tried H&G 200 gr. SWC and I get FTE & double feeds.

Yeah, a lot of users here can't get them to load proper. I don't know what kind of bullets they are using.

My buddy gave me two boxes of cast Lee Tumble Lube style 200gr SWC and they didn't feed so well at first. About every fourth one jammed. But he doesn't use a factory/taper crimp die.

I took them home and ran what was left through my factory crimp die with a bit of a taper and they now feed fine.

They fed fine in my Springfield 1911 the way they were.

He gave them to me to try because they won't feed in his Para-Or Hi-Cap 1911. I'll have to get him to try them with the taper crimp and see if they feed in that gun now too, or not.

Was so happy they feed in the XD, 1911 and my Taurus (moot point since it's a roundie) I went out and bought the mold to cast some myself. Might not even bother with 230gr RN no more if they work out as good as the test batch did. That nice clean hole is nice for praticing for both Bullseye and IPSC.

My Tac shoots them fine, but feeding si spotty. I get a nose up jamb about 1-7 or 8. It dimples tha back of the mag when this happens. I now don't feed them any LSWC.

This is not a problem it XDs only, LSWC do not load well in many gun even the 1911s until they have been worked on. I have a 1911 that thrives on them, 2 XD45s and a SIG 220 that will not feed the. I have had some luck with moly coated LSWC and a taper crimp with no shoulder but I will not say they are totally reliable. Plated bullets seem to work better but are a little less consistant in accuracy. By they way all of my guns have the feed ramps polished.

SWC in XD 45?

I use a load with 200gr. Bear Creek Moly , 5.2-5.6 gr. of 231 or HP-38, 1.230 OAL, WLP, and a crimp of .470-.471.

The moly coating does seem to help but it has not solved everything. I believe there is something in the angle of the feed ramp that is not friendly to flat nosed bullets. I also think there is enough variation in the tolerance that some barrels work and some won't. This would leave me to believe that if someone wanted to play with the OAL they could probably get a bullet to work custom for each barrel. I don't have the patience so I shoot the LSWC in my 1911 and LRNFP in the XDs.

Smile SWC in XD 45?

I have found with the help of my gunsmith That the small changes necessary are very easy to do. First, polish the feed ramp, Second- polish the chamber, Third- using a chamfering tool just break the edge where the feed ramp transitions into the chamber, and then polish that edge. Voila' !
