Clearing an XD45
As I've narrowed down my list of potential purchases for a semi-automatic 45, I really like the Ruger P345. I especially like the decocker that it has. But other features have drawn me to the XD. As I am about to purchase my final choice of an XD45, I'd like to see if I'm understanding correctly.
If I have an XD45 with loaded magazine inserted, a round in the chamber and cocked ready to fire, how would I "change my mind" at that point? My thinking is that I'd need to remove the magazine, then rack the slide to eject the round in the chamber. Is this correct, or is there something else that it would behoove me to know in this regard? Thanks! Amistad 'ya gotta love this stuff!' |

The XD has a lot of trigger take up and feels like a double action only semi auto but is a single action. I looked at the Ruger and did not like the decocker because of the two different trigger pulls on the first and second shot. I like how the XD has the same trigger pull every shot and it is always ready to shoot.
Just remember the keep you finger off of the trigger until you are ready to shoot. Gook Luck on your choice. Last edited by MasLakas : 07-23-2007 at 11:54 AM. Reason: spelling |

There is nothing wrong w/ a SA/DA w/ decocker. It just takes getting used to. The one upside to no striker fired pistol is if you do have a round not fire, you can often just pull the trigger again. Safetys & decockers are just another thing you have to think about when shooting. It's one reason striker fired pistols like the Glock & XD are so popular.

Only you can deciede
It all boils down to ,It's what you like best. I own a XD 45 compact and a Rguer P345PR and love them both. How ever if I had to choose only one it would clearly be hands down the XD over the Ruger. The XD just feels natural in the hand and that is why I also own a XD 40 SC so the Ruger doesn't get near the attention my XD's do. That doesn't mean the Ruger is a bad firearm, in fact it is a very good firearm but in my opinion the XD is an excellent firearm and I like them best.

I saw you post the same question in the Ruger board. In all honesty, considering all the factors you gave, I'd go with the Ruger P345. I have one, and I personally would not trade it for anything. It's built Ruger tough, and has a better grip size for your wife, and it fits your hand too. Compared to th XD-45, it only has 8+1 round capacity and the XD-45 has 13+1 IIRC (10+1 in Kommiefornia). If you need more than 8 rounds, you need something more than a .45acp. Then again, there's always that spare clip.
Don't get me wrong, XD's are great guns!!!! No doubt about it. It's more like comparing a Civic with a Corolla. Both are fine cars, but some prefer the Civic, others the Corolla. Don't simply rely on the safety or decocker. Practice safety as much as possible. Your wife too. Get to know the gun, and have the safety procedures memorized, and always practice them to keep yourselves fresh in how to handle a gun. I like the loaded chamber indicator on the RUger more than on the XD simply because it is on top and BIGGER than the XD's top little thing. Also, even though some don't like this feature, it can work to your benifit; when you drop the magazine on the Ruger, the gun will not fire even if there is a round in the chamber. It's good for clearing the gun in my opinion. Especially for those who are new to guns. This feature can be removed if you clean the rear sights (see the Ruger Board on that one), but I'd leave it alone. I've had NO problems with mine. Cleaning is easy, just remember to keep the main spring in the correct direction when re-assembling it. Also, it may be simpler to have a hammer fired gun since you can actually SEE the hammer is back, or is decocked. The XD's have a little pin that sticks out, but it may not be as, I don't know, 'convincing' (not the best word to describe it) as a larger hammer would be. If you get the Ruger, use Winchester White Box, Federal, or Magtech FMJ's or JHP's. They work great on it. The P345 does NOT like Remington loads. It will take any grain from 185 to 230 just fine. Eats 'em like candy. You can always get an XD-45 later on for yourself. But I wouldn't give up that Ruger. I almost did, and now I am glad I didn't. |

I'm grateful for each and every reply that has been posted to my query. This is really a wonderful place to get information!
Captain Jack, I had already decided to go with Ruger before I read your posts. Seeing and pondering on what you've said, has affirmed that for me (and my wife), Ruger is the best decision. I hadn't really thought of how much it means to be to be able to see (and thumb back, if desired) the hammer. By golly, you struck the proverbial pointed object right on its epicenter with your mentioning of that important item... I have no immediate plans of getting a second .45 semi-automatic, but if that time ever comes, it will likely be an XD. But at this point in my life, I'm certain that I'll be happier going with the P345. Thanks again for taking time to offer your helpful insights! Amistad 'happy to have at last decided!' |
