.400 corbon EFK barrel

Does anyone have any experience with the .400 corbon conversion barrel from EFK? I keep looking at it online and I like the thought of a more powerful caliber I could possibly use for a close shot in whitetail hunting. Also it might be a good self defense cartridge. Any opinions or ideas on the caliber? Am i way off base to consider it for a hunting cartidge? I'm looking to get into loading so I was also thinking about this as a cartridge to load.

No experience with the 400 but anyone that thinks a deer with a 230gr HP through the chest at 950fps+ is going to run off is kidding themselves.

If you want a 400 go for it, but personally I don't think you are really gaining anything in killing power. Shot placement is more important that a few fps.

Like you I hope to take a deer from a close range bow blind this fall with my XD45 if all goes well. The DT 230gr gold dot loads seem like the best option.

Thanks for the opinions. I'll be carrying my XD with me during rifle season so maybe I'll get a chance for a close shot too.

I guess i'll put off getting the .400 corbon barrel for now and maybe put that $150 towards another pistol.

I have a lot of experience with .400 Cor-Bon, and would suggest that you wait until XD "graduates" to 10mm, for a hunting round.

The deer is still gonna run with the bullet through his heart. Plenty of experience. Some will fall but ive blow out heart with huge exit hole with shotgun, muzzleloaders, rifles, and handguns and most will run 20-30 yards. Some may fall but more than likely not unless it is hit in the neck or spine. Here in Indiana you cant use a .45 ACP to hunt with also but you can with .400 Cor-Bon because of case length. You are right though that the .45 is all you will really need.

I'm holding out waiting for that to happen before I buy another pistol but I may not last much longer. If they don't hurry up and bring something like that out I may get a glock 10mm or a witness 10mm.

The .400 Cor-Bon case is EXACTLY the same length as a standard .45ACP case. It's just a necked-down .45ACP case.

We should not presume by looking and such. Read the cor bon web site and others.

The .400 Cor-Bon was designed to mimic a 10mm in a .45acp size. All that is needed is a barrel switch. Much like the .357Sig (mimics a .357Magnum in light bullet loads in a .40S&W size).

I still want a 10mm and a .357magnum. Why try to mimic when you can get the real thing?

The .40 Super, on the other hand, is the same case length as a 10mm case, but offers more case capacity and a factory load of 135gr. @ 1800 fps, and 971 lbs/feet of energy at the muzzle. The .400 Cor-Bon is to the .40 Super as Barney Frank is to John Wayne.
