How important is the color of a gun?
That's the question that I keep asking myself as I ponder the purchase of a new piece looming just ahead. I've definitely decided on the XD45 4" Compact, but I keep vascillating between black and olive drab. Short of flipping a coin, do any of you good folks out there have any insight (if there *is* any in this case) as to why one finish should be chosen over the other? Thanks, amigos!

It is purely a personal preference.
They are all going to work the same.

For a side arm, I'd say color is very unimportant and agree with the above post. For a rifle, it depends on why you have it. A range gun only, color is irrelevant. Hunting, SHTF,...I would say that color choice should be considered.

I prefer black on black for my handguns because they conceal better under a jacket in the dark. Also, I think plastic guns in color make them look plastic.
However, it is absolutely a personal preference thing and it's STILL America (until January 2009). Now on rifles I get the flat black on flat black composition stocks and I don't paint them because what pattern would I chose? How do I know? SO, I use these 2" wide cloth rolls of tape without sticky (wrap it, it sticks to itself and can be easily unwrapped and reused) and have it in five different patterns/colors including snow camo. For me this works best.

I think that some of the colors might make them more concealable as the do not look like a typical gun. That way a brief glimpse might not appear to be a gun.

This type of color selection phenomenon falls
under the Color Uncertainty Principle. What happens is that if you are uncertain about what color you want, you will surely want the one you didn't get upon getting the one you thought you wanted. This principle also dictates that you will eventually be consumed with the need to get the one you didn't get in the first place. The principle holds true regardless of which color you start the process with. Therefore, know that no matter which one you pick, it doesn't really matter in the scheme as it relates to the final outcome. That is to say, it's highly likely according to this principle that you'll end up with both in the long run ... |
