.45 ACP 185 grain JHP
What is your thought on the round in the XD .45 ACP service model, as compared to 230 grain Ball?

A faster lighter bullet is easier to control than a slower heavier bullet.
Ball ammo is only used by the military because of the Geneva Convention banning expanding bullets. Otherwise, they would use JHP ammo.

I guess you need to be more specific with your question. My general answer is ball ammo is cheaper and good for range work and I prefer lead over jacketed. JHP are more expensive not as good for range work. JHP provide better expansion with less penetration, and are good for defensive rounds. Higher velocity aids in expansion so lighter bullets with higher velocities are good for defence rounds.

Accuracy is my concern. For example, a Model 10 Smith is suppose to be POA/POI with 158 grain SWC. My question is if the XD is sighted POA/POI with Ball?

My XD.40Service shifts POA/POI quite a bit between 165 and 180gr bullets, it's clearly designed for 180gr bullets so I moved back to shooting those.
My XD.45ACP Tactical pretty much shoots everything great, can't quite explain it. The longer bbl? I dunno. I shoot 200gr JFP bullets from Montana Gold and it loves 'em.

My 45 tactical shoots different weight ammo at the same point I have mixed some up at the range one day and saw no difference. I do shoot 230 gr fmj for practice but keep 230 grain hydroshocks as my carry ammo.

Mine too. Unlike some, I actually like the 185grJHP. Expansion is good, especially from shorter bbls. If you move to a 185gr+P, recoil goes up to & beyond ball ammo, so little advantage there. I don't think there is a bad bullet for the 45acp.

The four Geneva Conventions set the standards for international law for humanitarian concerns, chiefly concerning the treatment of non-combatants and POWs. Many people confuse the two...but even if JHPs were legal for use, there is no guarantee that the military would use it. Ball ammo has better penetrating abilities that are more desirable in many situations. Cheers! M2
