In a word, yes. Polishing the barrel will remove the finish and leave you with bare metal.

Yes and no, actually. The Melonite (exact same thing as Tennifer) treatment actually penetrates the surface of the metal (only a few thousanths of an inch). The black coloring is a by-product of the process, so even if the black gets worn off, the metal is still treated and rust resistant.

Now... If you take off too much during the polishing process, you'll remove the surface treated metal and open yourself up to possible rust problems (unless you burnish the exposed metal). Regular light oiling should be enough to combat the red deamon, though.

I use a 6" polishing wheel with some rouge. Its impossible to remove any metal. I've been wanting to polish my barrel for a while just always hesitated on doing it. By the way, is there any ways to remove small scratches on the finish. I have an xd thats treated with melonite and their older more matte finish. seems like people got ripped off by springfield 4 ways. 1)no melonite 2)melonite and a crappy finish 3)springfield comes out with better finish 4) they chop the grip to make the XD a better pistol more of us really would have bought. Am i right on that one?

I think it would take more than just a "bump."

...uhhhhm, yeah. I'm going to have to go ahead and disagree with you there. (That was my Lumberg impersonation)

You can't say that SA is "ripping people off" because they continue to develop their product. They offered a product, you bought it, it's that simple. Is Chevy ripping you off because this years truck has more power and gets better MPG than yours that's a few years old? Nay, nay.

Why don't you hard chrome the barrel? It will be easier to clean, corrosion resistant, and it will look good.

I baked on a clear coat and used some K-Phos for rust protection, (and other protection)

Check it out, turned out great and is smooth as butter!
Clear Coat pics! Gotta See
