my xd 45 possibly saved my life

i was up back packing by myself (the main reason i bought a 45) and was up in the mountains of idaho and at some point i must have scared a rattle snake it was about 3 feet away coiled up and ready to strike i grabed my 45 with the shot shells loaded for the first three shots and took a shot at him i was pretty sure this killed him butbetter safe then sorry. i had to manually cycle the gun and fired the remaing two at him and waited a little bit to make sure he was dead before moveing in for a closer look when i got up to him i took a stick and picked it up and the sucker was about 5 feet long to say the least i was a little freaked out but very glad i had loaded shot shells in (we have alot of snakes where i live and i figured that if i ran across anything it would be a snake but i had the other 11 rounds as 5 hollow points and 6 fmj) i was wondering if anybody else can credit their life to their xd? if so please share

Not yet, fortunately.

Where in Idaho do you live?
Where were you backpacking?

I've never had a problem shooting them out of my revolvers (but I've never shot any out of my autos).

are they both made of the same type of steel?
i know that as long as the shot is a "weaker" metal than the barrel you should be fine....
