Agh! Fail to feed!

So I've been enjoying my XD45 for a few months now, but on my last few range trips it's been failing to feed at least once or twice for every 150 rounds I shoot. Naturally, this is quite a bit of a concern.

Before I start contacting SA, I'd like some opinions on what might be causing the problem.

I've been using Fiocchi lately. Previously I'd been using Blazer (aluminium case). I had an occasional FTF with the Blazer, but the problem really started when I went to Fiocchi. I don't want to blame the ammo, though, because it shot for about 600 rounds (about four trips for me) without incident. I do notice that the gun gets a lot hotter with the Fiocchi than it even did with the Blazer, however.

Also, I've been cleaning the gun about twice a month. Should I clean more/less often? Is it possible that I've been neglecting any particular part when cleaning and, if so, what would be most likely to cause FTFs and what should I do to remedy that issue.

I've ruled out a magazine-specific issue; I've had failures on multiple magazines. At one time, the slide release seemed to engage; I was able to cycle the gun simply by hitting the slide release. Other times, however, I have to pull the slide back to fully cycle the round.

Any advice?

I clean every 500-1000 rounds, and shoot Blazer. No problems. I'm not a big fan of Fiocchi though.

Same here but I have never used Fiocchi but Blazers seem to work very well.

I cleaned the gun last night and polished the feed ramp heavily, giving it a good amount of oil. No FTFs today. I'll see how it works tomorrow.

I clean mine after every range use. No problems with blazer ammo, whinchester white box or old army surplus ball. Also have a box or two of Speer Gold dot 200 gr hollow point with no issues.Never fired the (f) ammo, Maybe thats it? You stated you never really had issues untill you switched.

How many rounds do have through it now? If it's in the 3,000+ range or so it could very well be that your recoil spring is in need of replacement. It's just one of those things that many auto's need to have done once and a while. Also are you using a factory guide rod? It is a good idea to clean after shooting every time. It sire doesn't hurt!

Mag spring may need replacing, stock high cap springs are not the highest quality. Wolf 10%+ work best.

I clean mine every 300 rounds or 2 trips to the range. I shot 150 rounds of Blazer today with no problem. There is another thread on here with 2 folks with Blazer ammo problems.

I must say I was surprised to here you were not cleaning after every range run. Detailed cleaning and most importantly lubrication of the slide and internals.

As for the choices of ammo, I have been instructed that only brass cased ammo should be used....something about pressures being too high for aluminum cases, and that seems to make them expand. This wreaks all types of havoc on the internals.

I shoot the CCI Blazer Brass almost exclusively, with not a single FTF, stovepipe, or jam.

Also, as as a gauge, I check ammo labels to see if it is reloadable. This seems to be a good indicator of the quality of the case.

Hope this helps!
