the 1911 is in a class all its own. with the exception of the mauser rifle action and various other german designs, john browning has the most copied sidearm design in history (1911 and hi-power clones). many, many competition guns are based on his action (38 supers, 40 s&w, 10mm, etc. etc.) and even glocks and xd's give a nod to his design with the tilting lockback barrels. I've had several 1911's over the years used mainly in USPSA/IPSC competition from an old 1950's Argentine copy that I shot so much that the frame cracked to my current STI Spartan. The 1911 design is almost a hundred years old and is still kicking @$$ everywhere you find it. I don't know that I would carry my Spartan for CCW right now (bomar style sights, very light competition trigger and haven't really finished breaking it in) but I've seen some excellent carry 1911's. B/c I wanted a .45 acp for daily carry, I traded in my old Block 23 .40 for a XD 45 compact and I've been thrilled to pieces about it.

Addictive qualities?
I'm scared... I heard 1911's multiply faster than rabbits in the safes but this is the first time I heard they were addictive.
What's even scarier is I heard they multiply almost as fast as AR15's!

if you are wanting cheap and reliable...go with Rock Island or Springfield Armory Mil Spec, either one will only run you between 300 and 500 bucks.

Yes, I own a 1911 and went ahead and got the XD_45 service. I like the idea of 13 rounds ready to go. Which 1911, you ask? The answer is a no-brainer, one that I have not seen yet in this thread: The Taurus PT-1911. Ever read the reviews on it? It comes with all the bells and whistles already, and mine cost $479 NIB. Over 600 rounds through it without any problems of any kind.(more than I can say about the XD) Think about it--Taurus has come a long way and is producing excellent handguns these days, and they're affordable! Go ahead---flame away!--X

I have and like and shoot both 1911s and XDs, but in .45 and 9mm. I do shoot better with the 1911s (can't beat the straight, rail trigger), but just really like the XD platform just because its so cool.

Sure, why not. I have a 1911 and I might even consider buying a xd45.

I owned a terrific 1911 Kimber Pro-Carry and then bought the XD - which also is terrific, but with some different attributes. Maybe a some slightly different version of the 1911 next go-around. |
