Buying a 1911 is more a emotional / spiritual thing, not subject to a rational decesion making process.... pertinent since I bought another 1911 this morning sigh.

I have both. If the SHTF or whatever, I would grab the XD45 as my main pistol. That is what I bought it for and feel that the tough, simple, easy to strip, rust-resistant, lightweight polymer XD is nearly ideal for that.
However, my 1911 (a Kimber) has been extremely reliable and really is my absolute favorite pistol to shoot - and I feel that I have a good selection of good pistols to shoot. The 1911 has a terrific history that make it interesting to own, just like a Garand or Colt Single Action Army. It would also pull its own weight if it became my main go-to pistol. Very proven. IF I only had an XD45 and wanted to get a 1911 (and I certainly would) I would skip over the bargain 1911s and go for the more expensive Springfield Armory Loaded line or a Kimber. These have all the best upgrades to the 1911 format that make it a joy to shoot and own. A $3000+ Wilson Combat or Les Bauer would be terrific, but most of us don't have that kind of cash, and they are only incrementally better than the SA and Kimber, not three times better. But if you had a lot of cash burning a hole... why not! |

absolutely i will get a 1911. i originally wanted a 1911, but didn't want to spend that kind of money on my first semi auto and my first carry gun, so i got the XD45 compact.

Well, the same could be said about that question in reverse... if you own a 1911, would you buy an XD?
YUP! Just did.

I got a 1911 about six months after getting a XD45. I had never shot a 1911 until a friend got own in March and I enjoyed shooting it so much, I went and put one on lay-a-way two days later. Longest nine weeks of my life!!!
I like the 1911 so much I will probably carry it when my CCW gets here just because of the slim frame/slide. A spare 8 rnd mag is much more comfortable to carry than a 13 rnd mag. Good luck on you 1911 purchase. |
