+p ammo is great for carry just remember this, The average JHP only needs 800fps to open properly.
Also shooting lots of +p ammo will damage any firearm.

Thanks guys, I figured it was ok, just wanted to be sure. I'll only use it for "BG's" OR maybe some more hogs too

be sure to practice with it some though. 500 rounds through with +p will not hurt your XD one bit.

+P ammo was originally intended for calibers that are more on the "minor" power side in order to boost velocity and improve stopping power. The low-pressure .38 Special was the first +P candidate and really got a necessary boost, especially with improved bullet styles. In order to increase stopping power that seemed to show some glaring failures on occasion, the already high-pressure 9mm Luger got the +P treatment too.
Now the .45 ACP has been soldiering along since 1911 and 4 major wars with an impressive stopping record - all of this with rather low pressure but large diameter and heavy bullets. Still, some thought they could magnumize it - or at least thought is should have the pressure upped to higher standards for more velocity - hence the modern +P .45 ACP load. Now it is very debatable whether the .45 really needs a +P load, but it is there for those who feel it does. And the XD handles it if you wish. |
