frisco, are you saying you use 230 gr. GoldDots in your .40?
Nah! Sorry about the confusion, but I already shoot 180s in the .40, so 185s in the .45 is a bit close or similar - therefore I use 230-gr. .45 ACP to stretch the range to a heavier, and classic .45 bullet weight much like Myk9noseknows and Compact Shooter in their earlier posts.

i've read that it's a good idea to keep that you have black talons to yourself. i've heard of over eager cops trying to get your for illegal/banned ammunition. not to mention how old they are now...

how old is your ithaca 37 featherweight? i have one from 1952.

Black Talons are NOT illegal to purchase or own most everywhere that I know of in the country... Possibly not legal to make them anymore though...

*shrugs* I just bought another box of off Gun Broker, FBI isn't knocking yet

Black Talons were never illegal to manf. Win. just pulled the line because of the negative publicity. The SXT line is basically the same bullet w/o the black coating. If you have them, use them, but you should be firing off your carry ammo every 6mos or so anyway.

I have found the Federal 230 gr Hydrashoks to be very consistent in POI and flawlessly reliable. How do the Gold Dots compare price wise? I might try some of those...heard a lot of good things about 'em. I have a lot of ammo as it is...a few more boxes...er...cases wouldn't hurt!

I am in the "slow and heavy" bullet camp.
Gold Dots are usually very competatively priced with the Fed ammo. I only mentioned my tests in case it might be of concern to you. Personally if the Fed HS was the most reliable in my gun I'd shoot it too. Expansion is good but at least you have a .45 hole if it don't. I'm one who believes even the 230gr FMJ is a decent (not great just ok) load (because its a heavy slow mover the .45 is the only cal. I'd consider a FMJ in. Others will dissagree).

I fire off my carry ammo about every 2 months... More just for sh*ts and giggles than anything else

230gr FMJ has historic power, going back to WWII. Only reasons I would NEVER carry it in my carry pistol is worries of over penetration.

I hear you. The only time I willingly carry the 230FMJ is when I'm out in the woods hunting or camping ect. Especially in the winter.

Feeding issues due to cold possibly even...

Well, if I had a shoot a bear with a little 45ACP, or any other large animal like that, or some badguy wearing lots of winter clothing, I'd want a FMJ, not a hollowpoint.
