I'm going to search on proper grip now and see if I am missing something. I'm also going to try reversing my thumbs.
I actually did not really care about or notice the muzzle flip much till I saw the picture and was left a little Also, good point on the porting for carry. BUT, the flash is so fast that I wonder how much it really would mess with my night vision.

But again, the only one who really knows is the person who has had to pull the trigger after dark. |

So after 13 years of shooting well I'm going to test changing my grip to the "straight thumbs method" as recommended by the great information I have found here on this forum. Thanks to everyone, especially Loves2Shoot who helped supply the info I found on the links/posts below. (I'm going to post the links for the info I found to help another find it easier)
Lets see if the wife lets me go shooting tomorrow. Can you guys help me with that too ? lol ... I found all the great info I needed here: XD9 Grip Position Epiphany http://www.handgunsmag.com/tactics_t...306/index.html Love2Shoots Vids here: http://www.springerprecision.com/video.asp http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysa50-plo48

Have you ever fired a ported pistol? I can tell you from owning one that I wouldn't use a ported pistol as my carry piece. Shoot a mag through a ported pistol and you will understand. The noise from a ported pistol will cause you to lose your hearing. I would highly recommend finding a ported pistol and shooting it without ear protection before you pay someone to port your XD.

+1 here. Those ported pistols are LOUD. I've shot a few and in my experience, a 2" .357 (for example) is not as loud as a 4" with porting. That noise just goes up.

I mentioned something similar awhile back, to what you have submitted for one's consideration when looking to port a barrel and I was amazed at the members here who nearly went into Cardiac Arrest at the recommendation for someone to fire a pistol "without ear protection." You would have thought I was advocating shooting without ear muffs on a regular basis. The bottom line is...it certainly punctuates the point on whether nor not one would want to modify their XD like that or not, irregardless of the pot shots we take in illustrating the point Quote:
Hey, anyone remember the "ole adrenaline argument" from times past!?! If I am not mistaken, I believe the consensus was that with the adrenaline rush experienced in the heat of the moment of having to pull the trigger on a BG, the "loudness" of the bang would not even be remembered!?! Well, IMHO...the same rings true with the "flash" from a ported barrel. ![]() So, is our concern the FLASH or the LOUD BANG??? Shall we experiment or not!?! |

Grant it, our ability to see is tops, because if you can't see where your shooting, then you end up getting shot. However, the flash from a ported barrel is minimal in it's ability to fatally impair one at night time. Got thoughts |

I have a G32 that is ported. Anyone who has shot this know's it is a HOT .357 round. I've shot CorBon and GD in it at night and can honestly say that the 'muzzle flash' is basically a urban legend. It does not affect my night vision, or the night vision of the guys I shoot with. We soot from dusk to well into the night around 10:30-11:00pm. Nobody is blind, you can acquire your target easily, and we are actually on the move while doing this, not just punching paper.
But to be fair, the CorBon is designed as a reduced muzzle flash. We do quite a few night scenario's and are going to start filming them. Once that's done I can post them for you guys. I know that the muzzle flash seems like it would be an issue, but I hate it when people spread this rumor without any experience with night time compensated handguns. It's like the Richard Gere/Gerbil thing...nobody's seen it first hand, but everyone has heard about it and probably believes it. From first hand knowledge I can honestly say night flash from a ported barrel is of no concern. |
