Point Blank Question about SAFETY!

Hi all!!

I just bought the XD-45 (Compact 4" model) today!! Unfortunately, I live in RI, so I have to wait until NEXT saturday to pick her up!! I love the look, feel, and reputation of the gun.

This is going to be a CCW gun, and I'd like to be able to carry it IWB. I have quams about keeping a loaded pistol pointed at rather sensitive body parts, if you know what I mean, unless I hear from about 100 satisfied owners that they trust the gun in the same capacity.

So... Just how safe IS the XD??? (In regards to accidental discharge)

Thanks in advance!

Unless you are holding the gun, and pulling the trigger, it will not fire.

The backstrap safety is what puts most fears to rest.

I keep mine fully loaded w/one in the pipe and feel perfectly secure that it will not fire till I pull the trigger. Just remember a gun is only as safe as the person handling it. The XD is a solid and well built gun.

Absolutely! I preach that all the time. Still, I like to find out how safe a gun is by asking the owners. Product advertisements will never say "Buy our awesome gun, just watch out for our rather weak firing pin block" or something to that effect.

I bought the XD because of it's 20K round torture test results, but I still wanted to ask owners how they felt about the gun's safety.

Well, on a semi-related note, you can't very well keep a revolver fully loaded without one ready to fire, right?

I've got the same gun. Great choice, you won't be dissappointed! As far as safety goes the XD has a number of safety features that enhances its ease to carry, but I'm sure if you ask anyone here they will all basically say the same thing, FOLLOW THE RULES OF SAFE GUN CONTROL AT ALL TIMES!! Do what ever it takes to keep them in mind every time to touch your firearm! Repeat them to yourself if you have to. If you think safe, chances are you'll stay safe! Don't just trust the safety features on your XD, they are only there to support your safe habits. Enjoy your new XD!

Except that even with "one ready to fire" a revolvers carried with the hammer and springs at rest. If Carrying the XD cocked still bothers you, Smith & Wesson is "re-issuing" the model 40 lemon-squeezer revolver with grip safety (and no lock)! It's SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!!!!

Also remember to pick a holster that keeps the trigger covered. If the trigger can't move you are safe.
