Got the .45 compact. I Went to the range earlier today. Just finished cleaning her up when it hit me. I know what the biggest con is with the .45acp XD. After you shoot it, and clean it spit and polish, you want to just go right out and dirty it up all over again. That's the con! but wait that's a good thing no?

Cons...
One man's trash is another's treasure, after all. What might be a con for one is a pro for another. Take the grip size, for instance: I have average size hands, so I found that a Glock in .45 ACP was too big, while the XD pistols are just right. For some people any .45 auto is going to be too big, but I don't see anyone saying the XD is too small.
I have this superstition about topping off magazines, so I always empty them when I'm at the range. Thus, a 5-shot string ends up a 13-shot string, and that gets expensive. Luckily I've found a couple of handloads that work well in the XD, so I'm paying roughly $9.25/100 for ammo. If you don't put the Service together properly, stuff can hang up in the slide. After several tries I managed to make this happen, but I was able to undo things without sending the gun back to Springfield. Other guns can be damaged by incorrect assembly, of course, so the advice here is, "pay attention." In all seriousness, though, given enough time and familiarity, anyone could find something wrong. Some people might simply hate the gun the first time they try it. (Usually this happens to people who can't shoot and figure that any problems with accuracy MUST be the fault of the gun, not a lack of accuracy on the part of the shooter.) Personally, I think the grip is about 1/4" too long, but if it were any shorter, the mag capacity might be 11, or even 10, not 13. (A .45 that shoots 13 times without reloading is going to rate very high on my list of guns to check out--really big bullets, and lots of them.) I wish the trigger were better, but I've gotten used to it. Maybe I'll put in a trigger kit one day. I've changed out the sights on my Tactical, but not because there was anything wrong with the ones the factory installed. I just wanted night sights. The fact that I spent the money and effort to change out the sights is not a criticism of the gun, but an endorsement of it. I wouldn't have worried if I didn't think I'd be keeping it. Likewise I'm installing TFOs on my Service model next week. Hard to find carrying gear, but this problem isn't nearly as big as it once was. Now that the weapon seems to be accepted by so many devotees, the holster makers are catching up. Okay, that's it.

Cons:
Spare parts supply is not where it needs to be and Springfield won't sell parts to mere customers. Stock trigger is pretty long and has a less then crisp reset.

Damien in Seattle I don't list my guns - I know glocks, FALs, and AKs but I'm not sure my ability to fill a gunsafe with guns make me an expert on anything. All that you can depend on from a 45 is that it will drill a .45 - .70 inch hole about 14 inches into someone. There will not be "energy dump", people will not fly backwards, and they will not necessarily fall as if they have been struck by lighting. |

Not specific to just the .45 but one drawback to all XD's is the difficulty in installing sights. I fail to see why the factory ones could not be made user-replaceable.

Cons:
1. Hard to replace sights 2. lack of spare parts/upgrades (improving every day) 3. Trigger isn't the greatest out of the box 4. I can't get mine to feed SWC reloads at all 5. Cost of ammo drove me into reloading That said, I had a trigger job done last year on my xd45 and it's my favorite pistol! And I just reload with bullets other than SWC's |

After reading the drawbacks of the XD45, I haven't read anything I can't live with. The pros readily outweigh the cons.
As far as the price of ammo, I already load 223's for my AR. Just a matter of acquiring dies, powder, etc. for the 45. I like the factory sights, and in the future, I may possibily get nite sites. I read the thread about disassembly, and the problem it may cause if not done correctly. Man, there's a wealth of info here. OK, I'm convinced, I'm keeping mine. Time to bust the fruit of virginity, and get it dirty. I'm headed to the range tomorrow....uh, of course after the Bar-B-Q. Thanks to all who posted and about to post.

I had that feeling when I bought the SC. I didn't tell her at first... but once she said it was "cute", I figured it was ok.

I can think of ONE, and only one, legitimate CON . . . .
1) If you dont align the guide rod properly when reassembling the XD45, you may get a locked up slide. |

No mag extension for my compact. It's just a bit to small for my hand. a +1 would do it, but a +2 would be great.
My 1911 SWC reloads are powerful enough to cycle the XD. I gotta work up new loads. |
