I used to think I was a good shot -- until I picked up a handgun. Then I realized that rifles are just designed to shoot well and handguns are designed to ... be hand guns.

New shooter to new shooter advice...try starting a little closer next time, maybe 7 - 15 yards. Work on trigger and proper grip. Squeeze, don't jerk the trigger. Be sure you're not flinching or anticipating recoil. Distance and speed will come with time, trust me. I'm still working on both. There are plenty of other threads on here with better advice you can follow. All things aside, not too bad for the first time out and at 25 yds. I'm sure I was all over the place!

Me, being a relatively new shooter, and totally new to the XD 45,.........everything was about 6 inches low, but within the size of my open hand. There were a few flyers, but not too many.

The best thing you can do is start close and work your way out more. Don't be afraid to practice at distances like 7 feet. Make sure you are hitting the target good when it's close, then when you can do that consistantly, move it out. There's honestly not much reason to practice at 25 yards. While it may be good to do from time to time, the vast majority of your shooting should be within 7-21 feet.
Make each shot count. Don't waste time trying to hit bullseye at 25 yards when you are a new shooter. Poor practice habits only reinforce poor shooting. The further the target is away from you, the more your poor shooting habits will show. So you need to make sure you can hit the target good up close. 7 feet, 12 feet, 15 feet, 21 feet.. distances like that. |

I would definitely say I had some false hopes my first time shooting a handgun. I got in to the range, put the target back as far as it could go and started blasting off the rounds. Needless to say I left the range that day with my image of getting of spectacular hip shots at 50 yards shattered. Once reality sunk in I started off at 5 yards, did alot of reading around on here about grip and dry firing and what-not, and started to improve. I've still got a long way to go, but atleast I feel like I have an idea of what it's gonna take to get there. Keep practicing and save alot of money for bullets...
is it weird that everytime I see two dimes together I think about how that could buy me one .40 bullet?

sounds like you are either pulling down on the trigger very sharply or the target is really far back. if you want to see what you're doing load your magazines with a few snap caps mixed in and watch your gun, see what it does and what you're doing when you hit a snap cap and there's no recoil.

Thanks for the advice!
Just as an FYI.. the reason it was 25 yards is because thats where everyone else was shooting. The days when I go, and I am the only one there, then I'll be able to try much closer. |
