I cannot remember. I started shooting when I was a kid, using a ruger 10/22.

I don't remember how I did the first time I shot a pistol. But then it was probably 25 years ago with a 1905 S&W 2nd Change .38 Special revolver, which still shoots straight and true. From what I remember, my grandpa started me off probably at 5-7yds. Still seems the best distance to start from.

re: how bad shooting first time

If that is your very first pistol shooting, you should really consider becoming a professional IMO, esp. at 25 yards and not 25 feet! If this is your first outing w/an XD (is that a .40 or .45?), then that is still good shooting. Anticipated recoil is a natural thing and most of us fly bullets all over the place until we shoot thousands of rounds, I mean thousands!

I hope you have seen that diagram of causes of pistol shot placement, e.g., lower left 7:00 - 7:30 position is a 'yank' for a righty and this is that natural anticipated recoil 'over compensation' we do milliseconds before the trigger breaks...I still wing them sometimes today. But the fella that suggested the snap caps, is right on and you will literally see yourself yank or 'heel' (1:00 - 1:30 righty). If you can get to where you do not move the pistol on a snap cap, then you are ready to make sight adjustments to your pistol. [leftys are yank 4:30-5:00, heel 11:00 ish]. http://www.targetshooting.ca/docs/Pi...t_Analysis.pdf

here is one of many links, etc for that diagram, etc. Amazing how accurate it is.

FYI, I got a .45XDC recently and now a 9mm tac for monthly tac matches and FUN. wish i could shoot like you! (first time on and now sure this re: will hit in the right place or not...just like me shooting!) Was shooting a SA army 1911. got 2 beretta's 9mm, .40, SW 1076 10mm, just sold a Steyr M9 and a SW airweight 38spl I love my Berettas, wish they had a sweeter double action pull, but that will never happen and I went to the Steyr b/c everyone was saying "get a Glock" back in 1999!

I let one of the guys in my CCW class shoot my xd45 compact after I saw he was shooting that full size glock .45 acp that has a grip thicker than most tree trunks. His first shot at 15 yards was a perfect bullseye. Whether this was beginners luck or not I wish I had a picture of his face after that first shot. He set the XD down after 1 magazine and went to the front counter to place an order.

My first experience the the XD45 was with a borrowed Service model and it was used on beer bottles at 10-15 yds. I wanted to see if it worked as good as it looked and felt. Once both I and my buddy figured out where to hold the sights we busted glass virtually every shot. I have shot Glocks a lot and the XD is a very minor transition from that.
Yes, I went out and got my own immediately .

I believe I did rather well my first time at the range. This was done with my stock XD45 Tactical. Range is 15 yards, ammo is Winchester white box 230gr. FMJ, 13 rounds total. The group is about 3.5-4.0" horizontal. Oh, and don't mind those 2 rips at the very top of the target, those are just the holes I had to hang the target from.

I believe I tended to shoot left because I was using a VERY loose grip since I'm way too shaky with a firm grip, I think I need to get my trigger finger farther in there, and learn to break the trigger a bit smoother.

Either way, for someone who had never been to the range before, I did pretty damn good with a 3.5-4.0" group.

One thing's for sure, the dude in that target will never back-talk me ever again.

My roommates were a little weirded out when they came home and saw that target stuck to my door with a pocket knife. Now all I need is a little sign above it that says "THIS IS WHY YOU DON'T ENTER MY ROOM WITHOUT PERMISSION"

Your 25yd target looks pretty good, but then again, you said you had no idea how many shots were fired. Six hits out of 50, not so good. I agree, move the target closer if possible. I start new shooter out at 21ft. When all the bullets are going through one hole, then move to 10yds, maybe 15yds. You need to master the trigger & sights first & hits build confidence.
Even if you are building your SD skills for close & quick, you still need to know you can hit @ 25yds & further when needed. Just take your time & go one step at a time.

My first time shooting was at 6 years old with my great uncle's WWII 1911. The recoil nearly knocked it out of my hands...

Thumbs up 6/10 with a new gun...

Hey, from where I sit, 6 out of 10 at 25 yards is a pretty good target for the first time firing a brand new/strange gun. It takes a few mags or even boxes to get used to the feel of something new. I never did that good at 25 yards on something new that I'm not used to. People at the club let others try each others guns all the time and the first few shots...

I only wish I could do so well and pull off a target like that the first time out when my XD arrives.
