185 gr in compact.
I had a terrible time getting my XD .45 compact to shoot for me rapid fire, so much so that I bought another gun (M&P 9mm that I freaking LOVE by-the-way). Almost as an after thought, I picked up some 185 gr Black Hills hollow pts while buying 9mm ammo the other day and my XD loved them. Not just rapid fire, but period. It went from being barely passible as a carry gun to being one of my best shooting handguns. Anybody else getting that with their XD?

I shoot mud & chicken **** out of my XD45c w/ No problems.
The ONLY problem I've EVER had w/ the XD series gun is when the firing pin ended up with "muck" in it which caused a light hit on the primer. Tore it apart, cleaned it all up, another 500 rounds through with no problems what so ever. You say you had problems w/ Rapid fire, but never mention what happened when you tried. You went from .45ACP to 9mm, it's going to be like night and day.

The M&P is just simple the best handgun I have ever fired. Apparently, early on folks had some failures with them, but mine has never even had so much as a burp. As soon as I can get a .45, I will, but have total confidence in the 9mm. May not be the biggest dog in the fight, but I know it's gonna bite what I tell it to as many times as I tell it to. Lot to be said for that! |

I assume you are saying that the recoil was a bit hard to manage with the 230s and rapid fire. That wouldn't really surprise me. I know I had to get used to my service model with full house 230s. It wasn't that the recoil was "bad" per se, it just would bump my offhand thumb out of place under rapid fire. I added the Hogue HandAll and put some grip tape on the thumb groove and she's much more friendly. I dropped my loads down a bit too and she is very even more manageable.
Dropping to 185s sounds like an easy way to make her a bit more tame, so it doesn't surprise me. I have thought about picking up some 185s to load for the wife in the 1911, seems like a good idea from your report. |

Having said that, I can tell a huge difference in the way the different loads feel in my 9mm. 115gr a and 147gr loads feel great in my M&P, even in +p, but any 124 load feels like it "pops" more and is hard to hold on target when I go crazy fast. Could be same "Quality" of recoil property at work, I know that dinky little 9mm ain't pushing my 240lb butt around no matter what I shoot in it! |

Yeah, I have a LEO buddy, SWAT team member, who fully acknowledges that the 45ACP hits hard. However, he prefers the 9mm because he can manage it more effectively and follow up shots are quicker. Taken with higher magazine capacity, he prefers the 9mm. As he says, "If I put one in the running lights, it won't matter if it is 9mm or 45ACP".
Funny thing about different types of ammo, I sometimes wonder how much of the perceived recoil is the powder. |
