My XD45C does the same thing.
Fill the 10 round mag, insert it, chamber a round...no rattle. Take mag out to add 1 round which tops it off with the one already in the chamber (10+1) and I've found that the 8th round slides back and forth inside the magazine, creating the rattle. I have to tap the mag a few hundred times (slight exaggeration of course) to get the rattle to stop, but then it eventually comes back. I've resorted to not topping off the magazine after chambering the round. The weird thing is, with a full 13 round mag +1 in the chamber, no rattle at all..but if I just chamber a round off the 13 round magazine, and don't top it off then it rattles. |

This happens alot with mags. My 40rd mags for my AR used to do this. They only rattle when loaded and unchambered, or when 9 rds, etc., because the slide puts pressure on the rounds. The pressure causes a shift inside the mag, and somehow the pressure seems to "miss" one of the rounds, or more, allowing the rattling. Solution? Load 10 rds, chamber one, leave 9 in mag. If the rattling doesn't bother you, put 10 in. I solved my AR's problem by expending the ammo until it stopped rattling.

The rattle comes from the magazine

Oh well, guess i'll just have to go 9 + 1. It's no biggie, just.....it's for home defense. So if i have to be sneaking around my house at night with an intruder inside, i don't want a rattle to give me away. I guess if 10 rounds won't change his mind, 11 probably won't either....
Of course, then there's my rifle collection to persuade him........

My 45 service mags do that too... If I load up 13 rounds it has a small rattle with #11. I really dont care because it still feeds flawlessly. If you can hear that small rattle and know what it is when I'm carrying than something is really wrong
I really didnt notice it until about 2000 rounds and starting to carry 230 grain hydroshocks. My reloads load up without a peep. But once I figured out what the noise was I just figure oh well. There are more important things to worry about when carrying than that.

My XDSC9 does it too, and I figured it out. 10 rounds in a 10 round mag and the 7th round rattles front to back. If you look at the indicator holes on the back of the mag you will see it. Annoying, but cant hear it while holstered, no big deal and most importantly not a function issue.

My magazine rattle turned out to be #'s 10 & 12 rattling as the cartridges moved front to back. No amount of smacking the mag or reloading made any difference.
However, once the magazine is placed into the gun, the rattle goes away. I took the mag back out and pressed down on the top round in the mag and the rattle stops while the round is pressed. It must just be a thing with these staggered stacked rounds in these mags. |
