Thanks to all for the replies. It came down to economics. I got the 4" service with light and other "kit" items for $505.00. The 5" was going to cost $560.00 without the light. I'm not sure that I will use the light but the $55.00 made a difference. I think I read that all of the 45 acp's had the newer melonite finish. Is this correct?

Yes, all newer XD's are finished with the melonite process (except the stainless slides?).

I wanted to go with the 5" tactical when I first saw them, but after handling both I decided the 4" service was the better choice for me. My gun has to do double duty as "fun gun" and concealed carry protection weapon.

I dont regret my choice, but may one day purchase another XD and get the 5" tac.

Thanks. I was hoping I remembered correctly on this. I should be able to get out and shoot today or tomorrow at the latest. I haven't had a .45 in about twenty years so I am a little excited.

Having just had both a tactical and service model in my hands a day or two ago and speaking purely from an aesthetics point of view go tactical ... much sexier! I should have a tactical of my very own her by mid next week.
