Low Down:
22 yr old married female, I currently have an XD9 for home defense, and my husband (leo) has one as well as his service weapon. Since I'm a bit pudgy for my height... the XD9 is too hard for me to conceal. What do you all think about me getting an XD .45 compact for CC? |

XD45 Compact
I have two XDs. A service model 4 inch barrel and an XD9sc. The shorter grip really helps hide the gun carried CCW. I have held and shot the XD45 compact. The grip on that pistol is just longer than the XD9sc. That is long enough to hold the pistol without your little finger slipping under the magazine. You are correct in that the grip length is more important to hide the gun, than the barrel length. I think the XD45 compact makes a great CCW.

You only have ONE XD of your own?? C'mon, Justine, you NEED another one! Just in case. And, you might as well make it a 45 Compact because they are the most versatile. More concealable, lighter by 3 rounds and you can put the 13 round mag in for a house gun or range shooting. With the 10+1 in the gun and the 13 round backup you have 24 rounds of security right now!
Most of all, it's a 45! Recoil will be no big difference - I actually find the 45 more "comfortable" to shoot. The 4 inch barrel will work with the same holsters you use now, but the grip doesn't print near as much. And, since it is less grip-heavy, it doesn't shift around as much, either. The only downside is that you may find that every time you want it, your husband has "borrowed" it...Then you'll need another! Hope this helps and your arm doesn't hurt too much |

No one is twisting your arm.....that's just pure logic singing in the background.

How do you carry?
I agree with the other folks, when in doubt, buy another gun! Having said that, there isn't that much difference in the grip size of the .40 and the .45 compact. Think the .45 better carry gun, but would hate for you (in theory) to go and buy a new weapon without asking you how you carry. Most women carry in a purse, which is silly, and I agree trying to keep it on your body. There are alot of holsters out there for all shapes and sizes. Just bought a Comp-TAC myself and love it. Look around and try some stuff before shelling out new gun cash.
