Question on trade value.
I have been considering trading in my XD 45 service for a compact version. My local Gander Mtn. finally got one in and it allowed me to handle this version. I have to say that I liked it alot. I am pretty set on picking one up. I asked the guy behind the counter what I could get for a trade in value on my year old 45 service. He told me that if it was in excellent condition (which mine is) they would give me $250 for it. I have never sold or traded in any of my guns before but this seems pretty low to me. I'm going to go out to the "real" gun store (local springfield dealer) tommorrow, which is where I bought the first and plan on buying the next XD from, and see what they say.
I guess my question is to those who have sold or traded in a like new XD. What price point should I be looking to get? Is that $250 pretty standard?
Thanks,
Greg

No way, in my opinion. They always undervalue. If you sell it, I'd say you shoudl get at least what you paid -$100.

Gander mtn is notorious for hosing people. i sold two of my guns at a gun show recently. i made 435 on two guns, gander was going to give me around 200 for the pair. you are making the right decision by trading to the compact, it is magical.

Check the Trading Post forum on XDTalk. You can do much better in private sale.

Most dealers will try to hose you on a trade. Always better to sell outright. You likely will not have a problem selling it.

I inquired once at Gander about their used gun trade in/purchase policy and was told that they offer 70% of the current blue book value.
Below is from '06 Blue Book of Gun Values 27th edition for XD Service models:
100% - $460
98% - $400
95% - $350
90% - $300
80% - $265

I was going to get a compact grip. If the dealer I bought it from doesn't give me enough on trade then I'll just sell it outright. I really can't justify keeping the service *and* getting a compact. I don't expect to get 450 - 500 on trade in value ( I know how trade ins work ) but I really thought that $250 was a terrible low ball and just wanted to get some clarification from the all knowing XD gurus here. I appreciate all the advice here.
Thanks again,
Greg

you could always just do a grip chop and have a compact 45. search the forum for how-to's.

I thought about chopping the grip, however I would never do any kind of mod on a gun that I would carry for self defense. Even something as simple as a grip chop might be skewed against you in court.
