Thumbs up M&P pshh...XD 45 has interchangable grips too!

They are called:
Pachmayr, Hogue, and bike inner tubes ect

All kidding aside. Went to the store today and found myself once again eye-ballin' the M&P 40. Now, the ONLY thing I like about it over my XD is the grip. The front strap on the XD can be a bit rough on my baby-soft hands after awhile. Then I realized I ripped my hogue grip off of the XD before sending it into SA for custom work and never put one back on. I got a case of ammo and a new Hogue JR. I forgot just how much sweeter it makes the grip feel! I have always had a tru-fit one for my ruger p90, and it's great too. So, I saved almost $500 and opted for the $10 fix, and now have NO use for the M&P... it was a good day.

Funny side note, the guy at the counter said that grip would not fit a XD 45 compact. I said the Jr. is perfect and does not mess with the grip saftety at all. He was refering to the thickness of the grip however, and said it couldn't work. I don't know about you guys, but a drop or two of CLP and I have that grip on in 5 minutes. He said he would keep that in mind.

If that was the only thing you liked more about the M&P then you weren't paying very close attention to what makes it different and better.

I can just look at it and see what it does NOT have, and that is enough for me to back away.

I'm not a big fan on how it's trigger "saftey" works either. IMHO

while I carry the XD now and love them, I'm so sold on the M&P.

The M&P wins on the trigger pull, the XD and M&P are both nice though and I'm able to use both with about the same results.

The M&P wins on Ergonomics, The changeable back strap on the grip is nice and provides more options for different shooters. With that said the XD feels great in my hand and I use both with about the same results.

The M&P wins on finish, It is stainless steel in most every large metal component, the finish on top of that is durable a up to the challenge. The XD seriously falls short here, while the newer finishes and aftermarket finishes help they still rust and fixing a problem the factory should have sucks.

The M&P wins for function, not due to reliability as IMO the M&P and XD are both combat worthy. The M&P wins because it has a coil spring extractor, while the XD has a flat spring much like the original 1911s and this type extractor sucked in the 1911 as well. With that said both the XD and the M&P are up to the challenge, I just personally look at the flat spring as a weakness.

The M&P dose not win in the mag release area, the XD has a Superior mag drop being ambidextrous.

The M&P dose have a Ambidextrous slide stop but thats moot to me as I don't use it when it counts, I was instructed to always grab the slide and release it. I would have much rather it had a Ambi mag drop.

The M&P is Made in America by an American company, the XD doesn't have a chance here but this in no way effects the ability of the gun to preform.

The fact that the 45 ACP version only holds 10 rounds was enough to put me off. What were they thinking?

I MAY be interesed in the 45 ACP compact when it comes out if Springfield doesn't get going on a sub-compact XD 45 ACP soon.

I have the .45 compact and love it. As for the finish, I have read that the XD slide is in fact stainless with the Melonite finish. They just don't promote it for some reason. I don't know if this is an absolute fact however, I abuse my XD and have had it wet all day at times and uncleaned for many days, never any rust. Sometimes the brads on my jeans leave brass marks, but they either wear off with time or come off with a good cleaning. I have also dropped my XD onto concrete and with a good cleaning the concrete marks came off the slide leaving no mark at all.

I do like the steel chissis inside the polymer frame on the M&P though, but the XD frame seems well up to the task without one. The main thing I really prefer over the M&P is the XD'x grip saftey. I hate manual saftey's (which the M&P 45 will have) and it just makes me feel better when I am shoving it down into an IWB holster knowing that little clit on the trigger isn't the only think keeping my butt from getting another hole.

I trust my M&P more then I did any of my XD's.

And yes, the extractor is bulletproof on the M&P(No pun intended). S&W got it right this time. The XD 45 is a heck of a gun though.

As much as I like the XD grip, I find the grip on my M&P Compact even more to my liking. It's a good looking gun that feels great, thanks to the choice of 3 interchangeable grips that come with the gun. There is also a fellow by the name of Dan Burwell (Burwell Gunsmithing in Central PA) that does incredible trigger work on the M&Ps. He is to the M&P what Springer and Canyon Creek are to the XD. Below is the M&P Compact 9mm with the smallest of the 3 grips installed. Changing grips takes seconds.
