Failure to Fire today.
I had a failure to fire today with my xd45 compact. I did a search but every fail to fire note I read said it was ammo. I'm pretty sure that was not it.
I have about 500 rounds through it so far. On about the 25th round today, click...no bang. I waited half a minute or so with the gun pointed down range. I could see the loaded chamber indicator was up and the slide looked to be fully forward. I ejected the round expecting to see a light dent in the primer. Nothing. No dent at all. I was using UMC FMJ. I replaced the round in the mag, racket it, fired it and 25 more. No further problems. What should I be looking for? Dirt? Note: I did add the Canyon Creek tungsten guide rod & spring about 50 rounds ago. Thanks, Nick

How many total rds through it? Have you checked your striker assembly for dirt, debris, hanging up, etc?

Since it went "click" and there was no mark on the primer, either something prevented the striker from hitting the primer or the striker is broke. Since it went "bang" afterwards, I assume the striker is not broke. It could be dirt in the striker channel, or your striker safety was not fully released.

Have you disassembled the slide yet? (It is actually very simple to disassemble to the point where you can inspect the firing pin and firing pin channel.)

While you have it apart, check the firing pin retainer pin to be sure a piece did not break off and is binding the firing pin.

Maybe the firing pin safety didn't clear up out of the way. You would still get the sound and feel of a "click" as the striker tab hit the safety. That would be pretty unusual for a gun that I assume hasn't had its trigger components modified, but nothing is impossible.

Another possibility could be lock-up and/or extractor issues. i.e. Either just not quite enough lockup and/or an extractor that holds the round just far enough away from the breech face during cycling. With such an extractor and incomplete lockup there could be too much room between the primer and the firing pin.
I am not quite sure yet IF the XD is *really* headspacing on the case mouth or like the 1911 design which says it is headspacing on the case mouth but on many barrels is really using the extractor to "headspace". So far ALL of my (three) failures to fire in the XD have been incomplete lockup. AND the extractor holds the round (much) less tightly to the breach face than a typical 1911. |
