New gun owner, maybe a stupid question..
Hi
I just bought an xd 45 acp, and although i own another handgun (steyr m40) i bought that gun used. My question is, my xd was brand new, and when i picked it up, it was covered in oil/grease,should i remove this and re oil it with some clp, or rem oil before i shoot it, or is this "oil" good enough to shoot straight out the box. Thanks |

I never understood why some clean their brand new guns before shooting. Just shoot it. Whatever oil is on there from the factory won't affect anything.

Can't hurt.
Gotta remember that some people treat their firearms like rare porcelein, despite the fact that they arent fragile at all. |

I typically give any gun I've just taken possession of (new or used) a good teardown and light cleaning, if only to get a good look-see at the general state of things, paying particular attention to making sure there's nothing obstructing the bore that may have accidentally gotten in there somewhere between the factory (or previous owner) and me. I agree the oil isn't going to hurt anything, but neither will spending a few minutes doing a quick inspection/wipedown. Just my .02.

go for it, i like to be familiar with my weapons prior to firing them off. if something where to happen to it while at the range, i can better assess the situation, and take it down quite easily.
but yeah, you could just take it out and start shooting. if its a new gun, if its used.. tear it down right away.

Use true gun oil, not remoil or clp. neither of those is thick enough to really offer good protection from friction. It never hurts to clean a new gun. Afterall, mine was new and it didn't really have much lube on it at all.

cosmoline could have been applied by the place of business, its to prevent rust.
