dented cases

hey guys, new user/owner here. just got my .45 XD on Fri. and I love it. I've put about 50 rounds through it so far with not a single problem. However, I looked at the used brass and notices that almost all of them have a small horizontal dent on the side of the case. Does anyone know what is causing this? Will this be a problem if I start reloading?? Should I even worry about it?
All answers are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Most likely caused by the case being extracted improperly. And depending on how severe the dent is, yeah, you probably shouldn't reuse the brass.

Were you using low recoil, or +p ammo?

That happens to the brass that gets ejected from my XD45 as well. I shoot WWB 100rd. value packs if that makes a difference.

I'm using standard Remington UMC 230 gr. FMJ ammo. Could it be from the case striking the edge of the slide upon ejection? It is a very small ding, hardly noticable unless you look for it. It still bothers me, however. Should I call SA and ask them?

thanks for the replies.

There have been several people report this issue, but nobody has associated it with any malfuction. Do you also have obvious primer swipe? I could see how the two could be related if the gun is extracting so fast and hard.

Does the second photo in this thread look like your problem?

Ok. Yeah, that's my problem alright. I do also have some primer swipe, although not as bad as that photo, I don't think. So, should I replace with a stiffer spring?? Or, just shoot and not worry about it? You guys have been a lot of help, I can already tell I'm going to be visiting this forum a lot. Anyone reading this having the same problem??

Ok, I've looked through the threads and I haven't seen a whole lot of people mention this problem. I take it that I should call SA and ask them? What is their contact info, I am not at home and I don't have the gun manual with me.

I believe the dent in the side of the spent case comes from the case hitting the slide on its way out of the gun.

It's a fairly normal occurrence with autos. The case is ejected and hits the edge of the ejection port. It does not affect the reloadability of the brass. The dent will disappear when the case is resized. There is no need to throw those cases away. I've loaded thousands of 45 cases and never had a problem related to those minor dents.

Heritageguy and d-fence, thanks so much for all the help. I guess it really is minor and not a problem. As long as it goes bang and shoots fairly straight, I'll just enjoy it. Heritageguy I love your quote from Tuco, Good, Bad, etc.--- one of the best movies of all time. By the way, when they say the Good, Bad and the Ugly, do you think they mean Springfields, Tauruses, and Hi-points?????
