Winchester 45 ACP 230 gr JHP question

Today I saw at Dick's sporting goods some boxes of Winchester white box 45 ACP 230 gr JHP ammo. Are they any good? I tried to do an internet search on them but I couldn't find any data on expansion, weight retention, penetration etc. They were pretty cheap at around $20 for a box of 50 rounds.

Very good- I carry them for duty with my 1911. WW USA 230 JHP-

1. has proven reliable in this gun,
2. shoots dead to the sights at 50 yards,
3. stays under 4" at that distance, and
4. the bullet expands like it should.

Terminal ballistics are comparable with most good .45/230 JHP's.

And, they are accurate-

Wow, thanks for sharing that info with us. I have a box of WWB .45 230 gr. JHPs that I used to carry, but I was unsure of how good they were, so I switched to Speer Gold Dots. I feel alot more confident that WWB JHPs will get the job done, if and when necessary.

What are you using them for? Just to shoot or personal defense?

If just to shoot, you are spending way too much money for a box of 50 rounds.

50 round box of regular ammo, just for shooting, around me $11.00

He said JHP = jacketed hollow point. That's for carry.

I used to spend a lot and buy hydrashoks for my 9mm. ABout a year ago, I read a review of the WWB JHP at wal-mart. They perform as well as the higher cost ammo, and I get 50 rounds for the price of 20 of the other stuff.

I have them in just about all my guns now. I am satisfied w/ the 9mm version.

I don't shoot JHP for practice. Well I do at first just make sure my gun functions with them. I shoot ball ammo for practice (CCI blazer). Up until now i used Federal Hydrashocks for Personal protection, but they're expensive and you only get a box of 20. Also I can't find the 230 gr variety at my local stores, only the 165 gr which I think is too light for a 45 ACP. I guess they're trying to cater to the recoil sensitive people ( The box says Low Recoil).
Looks like I'll switch to the WWB ammo. By the way thanks a lot invssgt I really appreciate your pics and info.

David DeFabio at AmmoLab tested the WWB Personal Protection 230-gr JHP load and found its performance was as good or better than many premium rounds that only come 20 to a box and cost $1.00 per round.

I've seen consistent expansion in recovered bullets that is similar to the photo posted above.

It's a good 230-gr load to mimick your practice 230-gr ammo. I have two boxes of it, and my 1911A1 and XD-45 both have it in them.

Thanks for the post, that's good info. Does the same thing apply to the smaller calibers?

+1

I practice with WWB 230gr Ball, and carry WWB 230Gr JHP. They shoot the same to me, my gun likes the, I like them, and I suspected that even if they were a crappy HP bullet, they would hurt someone bad. Nice to know they are not crappy.

Enjoying my XD .45ACP Tactical. need to break in my 870, and my wife's XDSC9.

I carry my XD45 ACP Tactical, in a SuperTuck from CB. Very comfortable, easy to hide, easy to draw, and easy to reholster.

Looking for an HDR*, either an AR-180B, or Kel-Tec FBR.

HDR, Homeland Defense Rifle
